The Hammer of Boravia is an armored antagonist in James Gunn’s Superman. In the film, Superman’s intervention against Boravia’s invasion of Jarhanpur sparks a political incident; the Hammer’s attack on Metropolis brings that conflict directly to him. The completed film later reveals who is inside the armor—a spoiler beyond the villain’s initial introduction.
Who is the Hammer of Boravia?
The Hammer is an armored figure who serves as a direct antagonist to Superman. The name is confirmed in DC’s official video, “Superman – HAMMER of Boravia”. The available official material establishes the character as part of the film’s story; it does not establish that the Hammer is an entirely new character across all DC media.
Why does the Hammer attack Metropolis?
The Hammer’s role grows out of a geopolitical conflict rather than an isolated fight. DC’s retrospective explains that Boravia, described as a U.S. ally, invades Jarhanpur. Superman intervenes, creating a political incident; that intervention ultimately provokes the Hammer’s attack on Metropolis. The conflict therefore follows Superman home and makes the armored antagonist a direct threat to him. DC’s account of the film’s plot sets out this connection.
Spoiler: who is behind the armor?
The completed film reveals that Ultraman is behind the Hammer’s armor. DC’s July 14, 2025 Easter-egg roundup describes the reveal after the Hammer retreats. This is a later-film identity reveal, not something to confuse with the Hammer’s introduction.

DC also characterizes the film’s Ultraman as a substantial departure from the comic-book version. The name connects the film character to an existing DC figure, but the film incarnation should not be assumed to match the comics character in identity or characterization.
How the Hammer fits into this Superman film
DC describes the film as launching a new shared cinematic universe and notes that it does not begin with an origin story. That context helps explain why the story can introduce Superman amid an existing international crisis rather than first recounting his origins. It is separate from what the Hammer’s initial reveal establishes. DC’s retrospective provides that broader framing.
