Disneyland Handcrafted, directed by Leslie Iwerks, traces the park’s construction from groundbreaking on July 22, 1954, to its opening on July 17, 1955. That is just under twelve months, so “one year” is a rounded description. Disney announced the documentary for Disney+ and Disney YouTube beginning January 22, 2026.
What the documentary covers
Disneyland Handcrafted tells the construction story from the start of work through opening day. Disney describes the film as assembled from archival footage and original audio, including 16mm reels and material first filmed for the Disneyland television series. The company says Iwerks and her team reviewed overlooked archive material and arranged it chronologically; “rare” is Disney’s description of the footage.
In a January 2026 interview with TechRadar, Iwerks estimated that the crew reviewed roughly 65 to 70 hours of material. She said dated slates on the reels helped them determine when and where scenes were filmed. She also recalled footage showing that construction continued close to opening: “And, you know, even one month out they’re still building Tomorrowland and that was crazy.” The hours figure is the director’s estimate, not an independently audited archive count.
The documentary’s timeline is also available in a contemporaneous companion: The Pre-Opening Report from Disneyland, a 55-minute 1955 film listed by Disney+. Its catalog description says Walt Disney introduces Winston Hibler, who shows how studio technicians designed and built rides and shows shortly before opening.

How long did Disneyland take to build?
PBS dates construction’s start to July 22, 1954, and Disneyland’s opening to July 17, 1955. The opening came five days short of the first anniversary of groundbreaking. The familiar “one year” description is therefore close, but not an exact twelve-month construction period.
The project had been developing for years before construction began. According to PBS American Experience, Walt Disney funded WED Enterprises to develop the park concept, with themed regions including Adventureland, Fantasyland, Frontierland and Tomorrowland.

A park designed as a connected story world
Disneyland was planned as more than a set of separate rides. The Walt Disney Company’s retrospective says the designers considered more than 100 layouts before choosing an arrangement centered on a hub, with themed lands branching from it. Emily (Emo) O’Brien, a Portfolio Executive Creative Producer at Walt Disney Imagineering, is quoted saying, “There were actually more than 100 layouts for Disneyland.”
The television connection was part of the park’s story as well as its publicity. PBS reports that in mid-1953 Roy Disney negotiated an agreement under which ABC committed $5 million toward the park in exchange for a weekly one-hour Disney program. The Walt Disney Company says the series premiered on ABC on October 27, 1954. In its first episode, “The Disneyland Story,” Walt Disney said, “The story of Mickey is truthfully, the real beginning of Disneyland.”

Rebecca Cline, Director of the Walt Disney Archives, calls Disneyland “a truly revolutionary concept” in the company retrospective, describing it as the first themed park and connecting its design to work already being done at the Disney studio.
Opening day was a deadline, not a flawless finish
PBS’s account makes clear that opening on schedule did not mean everything was ready or ran smoothly. Traffic backed up for seven miles, heels sank into soft asphalt, and counterfeit tickets and overcrowding contributed to shortages, including refreshments running out. A gas leak temporarily closed Fantasyland, while an overloaded power grid stopped Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride.

The park drew 3.6 million visitors during the year after opening, according to PBS. That figure refers to the following year, not to opening-day attendance.
