On its Q2 2026 earnings call, co-CEO Greg Peters said the company would continue considering a free offering but had no near-term plans to launch it. Netflix has separately said it is re-testing limited free trials for some prospective members in certain markets; those trials are not an ongoing free subscription.
Is Netflix launching a free version in your country?
There is no announced launch date, eligible-country list, or permanent free tier to sign up for. On the Q2 2026 earnings call, Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters said a free offering could make sense in some markets, while cautioning that it could draw customers away from paid plans. The transcript records him saying the company would keep considering the idea but had “no near-term plans to launch something.” (Earnings Whispers, Q2 2026 call transcript, July 16, 2026)

Peters identified two considerations: whether a free plan would cannibalize paid tiers and whether a potential market has a scaled advertising business. That describes factors Netflix is weighing, not a commitment to launch in any particular country.
Are Netflix’s free trials the same as a free plan?
No. Netflix’s Q2 2026 shareholder letter says the company began re-testing free trials for non-rejoining new members in a number of markets, excluding the United States and the United Kingdom. It does not say those trials are permanent, available to everyone, or equivalent to a continuing no-payment subscription. The letter does not provide trial duration or a complete list of participating markets. (Netflix Q2 2026 shareholder letter, July 16, 2026)

A trial is a limited promotion for eligible people; a permanent free tier would be an ongoing plan with its own terms. Netflix’s announcement of trial testing therefore does not confirm that a permanent free version is coming.
What can viewers use instead?
Netflix’s paid ad-supported plan
Netflix already offers a lower-priced, ad-supported experience in selected countries. Its Help Center says commercial breaks appear in most shows and movies. Most of the catalog is available, but some titles are unavailable because of licensing restrictions, and the plan is not offered in every region. This is a paid option, not a free tier. Where the ad plan is available
Netflix Investor Relations lists ad plans in 12 markets as of 2026: Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Netflix has announced 15 additional ad-plan markets for 2027: Austria, Belgium, Colombia, Denmark, Indonesia, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, the Philippines, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, and Thailand. These are ad-plan markets, not announced markets for a free version. (Netflix Investor Relations: Top Investor Questions)
Netflix said in its May 2026 Upfront announcement that its ad-supported experience reached more than 250 million global monthly viewers. That is a company-reported audience figure; it is not a count of paid ad-plan subscriptions or free users. (Netflix Upfront 2026: Get Closer, May 13, 2026)

What is still unknown about a permanent free tier?
Netflix has not specified whether it will launch one, when it might arrive, which countries might qualify, who could sign up, or what its catalog and advertising would look like. Until Netflix makes a specific announcement, reports that the company is considering the idea should not be treated as a launch promise.
