A Bexar County grand jury indicted Alvarez on November 17, 2025, on a murder charge. The Los Angeles Times reported the indictment as a single felony count of first-degree murder. It followed Alvarez’s arrest and charge after Joss was shot and killed at the site of his San Antonio home.

An indictment means a grand jury found sufficient grounds for the case to proceed; it does not establish guilt. The latest located court report, from KSAT on May 13, 2026, described Alvarez as a defendant while both sides continued gathering information and locating witnesses.
What happened at the property?
Joss was shot on June 1, 2025, at the property where his San Antonio home had stood before it was destroyed by fire on January 23, 2025. The Los Angeles Times reported that police responded to the 200 block of Dorsey Drive.

KSAT’s account of a police report says Joss was at the property to check his mail. A witness told police that Alvarez parked behind the vehicle Joss was in, argued with him outside it, and threatened to shoot him before firing a rifle. KSAT also reported that, after being detained, Alvarez told an officer, “I shot him.” These are reported statements and allegations; they are not findings made at trial.
What is disputed about motive?
Joss’s husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, alleged that the shooter yelled homophobic slurs before firing. The defense denied that Alvarez made homophobic statements and has asserted self-defense. Those accounts conflict, and the indictment itself does not settle what motivated the shooting.

The public statements from police also changed in emphasis. The Associated Press reported that San Antonio police initially said they had found no evidence linking the shooting to Joss’s sexual orientation. Police Chief William McManus later called that initial statement “premature” and said the issue was part of the investigation. The sources available here do not establish a resolved motive or a hate-crime finding.
The Associated Press reported that, under Texas law, a hate-crime finding, if applicable after conviction, would be handled as a sentencing enhancement rather than as a separate charge. That is distinct from the murder indictment against Alvarez.

What was the latest court update?
On February 24, 2026, KSAT reported that the case remained under evidence review and that a status hearing had been reset for May 13. At that May hearing, prosecutor Neil Cordero said the state was still gathering information from witnesses. Defense attorney Jason Goss told the court the defense had identified “40 to 60 relevant witnesses” and was working to locate them.
The parties agreed to a further hearing on June 29, 2026. The reports available here do not verify whether that hearing occurred or describe any later ruling or change in the case’s status. A current Bexar County court record or subsequent local reporting is needed to confirm developments after May 13.
Who was Jonathan Joss?
Joss, 59, was best known for voicing John Redcorn on King of the Hill and had a recurring role as Chief Ken Hotate on Parks and Recreation. The Associated Press reported that King of the Hill originally ran for 13 seasons from 1997 to 2008 and that Joss had worked on its reboot, which premiered in August 2025.
