Neeraj Madhav said he built Moosa moment by moment, focusing on each scene rather than the character’s later transformation in The Family Man.

Neeraj Madhav approached Moosa in The Family Man one scene at a time: rather than play toward the character’s later transformation, he focused on the emotion a scene required. In interviews published in 2019, he described the part as a sharp departure from his earlier romantic or fun-filled roles—and, at that point in his career, the best role he had done.

Why Moosa was a different role for Madhav

In a September 30, 2019 interview with Scroll, Madhav described Moosa as unlike the parts he had mostly played before. Those roles, he said, were generally romantic or fun-filled. He called Moosa “the best role I have done in my career so far”—his assessment at the time, not a claim about his current career ranking. Scroll also described the part as his web-series debut and first Hindi-speaking role. Read the Scroll interview.

The contrast at the heart of the performance is between Moosa’s initially vulnerable, ordinary-seeming manner and the violence the story later reveals. That contrast gave Madhav a different kind of challenge from simply presenting a character as threatening from the outset.

How he built Moosa scene by scene

Madhav said he had no personal reference point for playing a terrorist and did not rely on extensive homework. Instead, he tried to respond to what each scene demanded without anticipating where Moosa’s character arc would lead several episodes later:

“One of the challenges was that unlike my previous roles, for this I had no reference point. I don’t know any terrorist. And I don’t like doing a lot of homework as I am an instinctive actor. I did each scene according to the emotion required out of me in that moment, clearing my mind of where my character graph would be a few episodes later. That made me authentic from moment to moment.”

In a separate interview reported by The Indian Express from PTI, he described the same approach in practical terms: “I wanted the particular scene that I was in to be convincing without thinking about this bad*** guy. That worked for me and for the directors. I tried to live in every scene in a way that it looks convincing. When you put together the scenes, you understand the graph.” Read The Indian Express/PTI report.

The method meant that the character’s later revelations did not have to dictate every earlier moment. Madhav aimed to make the immediate behavior believable; the larger arc emerged when those scenes were seen together.

Madhav’s account of the character emphasizes that Moosa is not only defined by the threat he poses. He credited creators Raj and DK with trying to understand the person behind the antagonist, including his relationships and trauma. As he put it, “It makes Moosa more humane rather than being just a regular villain. A lot of people could connect with his trauma.” That is Madhav’s interpretation of the character’s humanizing elements, rather than a measurable claim about all viewers.

Scroll’s interview also records Madhav recounting individual responses from viewers after they binge-watched the series. Some told him they paused at episode six to search for him because his innocent-seeming portrayal made the twist difficult to believe; others said they were sad at the prospect that he might not return in season two. These are anecdotes he shared in the interview, not audience statistics.

How Madhav got the part—and his view of the casting

In the PTI report carried by The Indian Express, Madhav recalled getting a call from casting director Mukesh Chhabra and asking for a briefing. He later spoke with director DK, who considered him suitable for the character and asked him to audition.

Madhav also praised the creators’ choices around regional backgrounds, saying they had cast “a Tamil actor to play a Tamil character, a Malayali for a Malayali, and so on.” He added, “Also, when this exchange of actors happen, new markets open up.” These were his comments about the casting he observed on the series, not a broader account of every casting decision or a stated policy.
