Nelly said he wanted to marry Ashanti after learning she was pregnant because he did not want her to be a “baby mama,” according to reports about his 2025 interview with Bootleg Kev. The same accounts say the couple had not discussed marriage before the pregnancy news.
What Nelly reportedly said about marrying Ashanti
In a March 2025 interview with Bootleg Kev, Nelly reportedly explained that he decided to marry Ashanti after learning she was pregnant because he did not want her to be a “baby mama.” That wording was reproduced by iHeartRadio and TheGrio.

iHeartRadio also attributes this reflection to Nelly: “We already knew where we were in life and if we’re back like this, this must be what this is supposed to be.” The wording and punctuation here follow iHeartRadio’s published account; the interview audio was not independently reviewed for this article.
Had they discussed marriage before the pregnancy?
According to iHeartRadio’s account, Nelly said he and Ashanti had not talked about marriage before they learned she was pregnant. His “baby mama” remark is therefore best understood as his reported explanation of the decision as events unfolded—not proof that pregnancy was the only reason they married, or a statement of Ashanti’s own perspective.

When did Nelly and Ashanti get married?
The reports say the couple married privately in 2023. TheGrio specifies that the wedding took place in December. Their marriage became public in 2024, and TheGrio reports that their son was born in July of that year.
How their relationship reportedly resumed
iHeartRadio says Nelly and Ashanti encountered one another at the 2021 Fat Joe and Ja Rule Verzuz event. Nelly reportedly greeted her, but they did not immediately resume a conversation; communication renewed later. The reported sequence places that encounter before their reunion, private wedding, and the 2025 interview.

What the headline means—and what it does not establish
The headline condenses Nelly’s reported explanation into a memorable phrase. The surrounding account adds important context: the couple had not discussed marriage before the pregnancy news, and Nelly described choosing marriage as their relationship was moving forward. The reports establish what he was said to have told Bootleg Kev; they do not establish the couple’s full private reasoning.
