The “Netflix leak” behind the headline was reported on August 8–9, 2024. Netflix said a post-production partner had been compromised and footage from several titles had leaked online. Crunchyroll separately said a leak affected one of its fall series and that it had opened an investigation. Contemporary reporting identified that series as Re:ZERO Season 3 and linked the incident to post-production company Iyuno. The full extent and technical cause were not publicly established in the reporting.

What happened in the Netflix and Crunchyroll leak?

Unreleased footage associated with Netflix and Crunchyroll appeared on social media, according to TheWrap’s August 8, 2024 report. Netflix said a post-production partner had been compromised. Crunchyroll said it was aware of a leak ahead of one of its fall series and had opened an investigation to identify its source.

Netflix’s spokesperson told TheWrap: “One of our post-production partners has been compromised and footage from several of our titles has unfortunately leaked online,” adding, “Our team is aggressively taking action to have it taken down.” The wording described the company’s response at the time; it does not establish what was later removed or the investigation’s eventual outcome.

Which shows and anime were reported as leaked?

TheWrap listed the following titles and episode counts in its account of the leak. These were outlet-reported details, not a complete inventory confirmed by Netflix or Crunchyroll.

Heartstopper Season 3 Reported as among the leaked material; no episode count stated here

The Los Angeles Times reported on August 9, 2024 that Re:ZERO Season 3 was affected on Crunchyroll, and that Arcane Season 2 and Heartstopper Season 3 were among the leaked material, citing other outlets. The public reporting did not establish a definitive, company-confirmed list of everything exposed.

Was Crunchyroll affected too?

Yes. Crunchyroll’s spokesperson told TheWrap: “We are aware of a content leak ahead of one of our fall series. We’ve opened an investigation to identify the source of this leak, and our team is taking action to have it taken down.” The Los Angeles Times identified the affected series as Re:ZERO Season 3. Crunchyroll’s statement confirmed a leak and an investigation at that time, but did not itself name the series.

How did the leak happen?

Netflix attributed the incident to a compromised post-production partner. The Los Angeles Times reported that Iyuno, a company providing dubbing and subtitling services, acknowledged a security issue involving access to confidential content. The report did not provide a definitive public forensic account establishing exactly how the intrusion occurred.

Iyuno’s statement, reproduced by What’s on Netflix on August 9, 2024, said it was aware of “a recent security issue, involving unauthorized access to confidential content,” and was investigating to mitigate potential risks and identify those responsible. What’s on Netflix also relayed a technical theory attributed to a 4Chan user and discussed by security firm MomentPort. That theory was not presented as an independently confirmed forensic conclusion, so it should not be treated as the established method of compromise.

What did Netflix mean by “aggressively taking action”?

In its August 8 statement, Netflix said its team was taking action to have leaked footage taken down. The phrase indicates the response Netflix said it was pursuing at the time. The available reports do not establish how much material was removed, whether every copy was taken down, or the present status of any remediation.
