The filing concerns a competition that contemporary coverage described as involving more than 1,000 contestants and a $5 million prize. What does the complaint say about sexual harassment?
The plaintiffs allege that female contestants experienced sexual harassment and a hostile work environment. The Washington Post quoted the complaint: “The female contestants particularly and collectively suffered as a result of Defendants’ actions.” That is the plaintiffs’ characterization in their filing, not a court’s conclusion (The Washington Post).

Some descriptions of alleged incidents were redacted in material available to reporters, including to protect privacy and address confidentiality concerns. As a result, public reporting does not support a fuller account of specific incidents or the identities of the contestants involved. Variety reported that one plaintiff, identified only as Contestant 5, said she had wanted to join because she was a MrBeast fan and his videos had brought her comfort during the COVID-19 pandemic (Variety).
Why do the contestants argue they should be treated as employees?
The plaintiffs’ employment theory is that contestants who contracted for compensation and performed under production’s control should receive employee protections under California law. Plaintiffs’ attorney Robert Pafundi argued that the contracts and production staff’s control support that position. It remains the plaintiffs’ legal argument; the available sources do not establish that a judge has ruled contestants were employees (Los Angeles Times).

Is this a certified class action?
No. The five contestants filed a proposed class action, meaning they seek to represent a broader group. That is not the same as a class being certified by the court. The case is identified in legal coverage as 24STCV24042 in Los Angeles Superior Court (Courthouse News Service).
