Murderbot is a science-fiction thriller-comedy on Apple TV, adapted from Martha Wells’s The Murderbot Diaries. Its hook is a security construct that secretly gains free will, must hide that fact, and would rather watch futuristic soap operas than get involved with the humans it is assigned to protect. That mix of danger, dry humor and reluctant attachment makes it a strong pick for viewers who want character-led sci-fi with a comic edge.

What is Murderbot about?

The series follows a self-aware security construct—often called a SecUnit—that has hacked its governor module and concealed its independence. Apple describes it as horrified by human emotion but drawn to the vulnerable clients it has been tasked with protecting. While it tries to complete a dangerous assignment without exposing its secret, its preferred escape is watching futuristic soap operas and being left alone.

That contradiction is the show’s central appeal: Murderbot is capable and guarded, yet its attempts to avoid human connection keep colliding with the people around it. Apple categorizes the series as a sci-fi thriller-comedy, a useful description of its blend of mission stakes and comic perspective.

Is Murderbot worth watching?

It is worth a look if you enjoy science fiction that builds its story around an unusual point of view rather than spectacle alone. The premise offers suspense—a covertly self-aware construct working among people who do not know what it is—while Murderbot’s impatience with emotional intimacy supplies the comedy. Alexander Skarsgård leads the series, and author Martha Wells’s involvement as consulting producer gives the adaptation a direct connection to the books.

The series is rated TV-MA on Apple’s official listing. Check the Apple TV page in your region for the rating displayed there before deciding whether it is suitable for your household. The premise and credits support a recommendation, but they do not guarantee that every viewer will enjoy the adaptation.

Where and when can you watch it?

Apple lists Murderbot as streaming on Apple TV. The first season has 10 episodes. Apple’s original schedule premiered the first two episodes globally on May 16, 2025, then released episodes weekly through July 11, 2025. Check local availability and current subscription terms on Apple’s service, since viewing access can vary by region and terms can change.

Who made the series?

  • Lead: Alexander Skarsgård stars and executive produces.
  • Creators: Chris and Paul Weitz created the series and are executive producers.
  • Author involvement: Martha Wells, who wrote the source books, served as consulting producer.

How does the show connect to the books?

Murderbot is based on Martha Wells’s The Murderbot Diaries. A natural starting point for readers curious about the source is All Systems Red, the first listed novella in Wells’s bibliography, published by Tor.com in 2017. It introduces a company-supplied self-aware SecUnit accompanying scientists on a distant planet. Wells’s official bibliography identifies The Murderbot Diaries as the 2021 Hugo Award winner for Best Series.

The books continue with Artificial Condition, Rogue Protocol and Exit Strategy (all 2018), followed by Network Effect (2020), Fugitive Telemetry (2021) and System Collapse (2023). Wells notes that Fugitive Telemetry is set before Network Effect. The series listing establishes the books as the source, but not a one-to-one mapping between television episodes and individual books.

Will there be a second season?

Apple announced a second-season renewal on July 10, 2025. In that announcement, creators and executive producers Chris and Paul Weitz said, “We’re so grateful for the response that ‘Murderbot’ has received, and delighted that we’re getting to go back to Martha Wells’ world to work with Alexander, Apple, CBS Studios and the rest of the team.” The announcement confirms the renewal; it does not establish a premiere date.
