Madhur Jaffrey stars as a swaggering, comic grandmother in “Nani,” a 2019 hip-hop video by Mr Cardamom, Zohran Mamdani’s music persona. The song was inspired by Mamdani’s grandmother, Praveen Nair—but Jaffrey plays a fictionalized character, not Nair. Jaffrey’s connection to the title Shakespeare Wallah is her earlier role as Manjula in James Ivory’s 1965 film.

What happens in “Nani”

The video begins with a family-role conflict: a grandmother is criticized for not meeting her son’s expectations around childcare. She then answers with a self-possessed rap persona, turning the tension into comic fantasy. Jaffrey appears in giant red sunglasses, a yellow beret and an oversized jacket, delivering rebukes with deliberately bold, sometimes profane swagger. Scroll.in’s April 3, 2019, report described the video as released on YouTube earlier that month.

Who is Mr Cardamom?

Mr Cardamom is the music persona of Zohran Mamdani. In 2019, contemporary coverage described him as a Queens-based rapper and “Nani” as his first solo video under that name. Before it, he had worked with Abdul Bar Hussein (HAB) on “#1 Spice,” a food-themed song for Mira Nair’s 2016 film Queen of Katwe. Scroll.in

The real grandmother behind the song—and Jaffrey’s fictional character

“Nani” was written as a tribute to Mamdani’s grandmother, Praveen Nair. The Irish Times, republishing New York Times reporting on April 3, 2019, described Nair as a former social worker in Delhi and a founder of Salaam Baalak Trust, which helps children living on the streets. That biographical inspiration is distinct from the music video’s invented, exaggerated grandmother: Jaffrey is not portraying Nair or documenting her life. The Irish Times account

Why Madhur Jaffrey’s earlier role matters

Jaffrey played Manjula, a film star, in James Ivory’s Shakespeare Wallah (1965). That role gives context to the performer in “Nani,” but the rap video is a separate, much later performance. Jaffrey was also known as an actress and as an author and television presenter associated with Indian cooking. Scroll.in

For Jaffrey, the contrast was part of the acting challenge, not a claim that the character reflected her own life. She said the role was “like playing Lady Macbeth” and added, “If you’re an actress you have to play everything.” The Irish Times report says she watched hip-hop videos to prepare and found mouthing the rapid lyrics in rhythm difficult. A New York setting, not a generic backdrop

Mamdani described the creative aim as “a love letter to desi New York.” Reported locations included Parkchester in the Bronx and Jackson Heights in Queens, including the Kabab King diner; the production also used a food cart. Those neighborhood details place the video within South Asian diaspora life in New York rather than an unspecified music-video setting. The Irish Times

Why the performance stands out

“Nani” brings together three distinct elements: a family tribute, a comic reversal of expectations about a grandmother, and Jaffrey’s deliberately forceful performance. Its meaning depends on keeping the people straight: Praveen Nair inspired the song; Madhur Jaffrey performs the fictional on-screen Nani; Mr Cardamom is Mamdani’s artist name. The video’s New York locations and Jaffrey’s shift from her earlier dramatic screen work give the performance its particular context. The Juggernaut’s April 30, 2019, cultural account
