Mr. & Mrs. Mahi begins as a story about a husband discovering his wife’s cricketing talent and helping her pursue it. Its strongest idea is also its central tension: coaching Mahima means Mahendra must support a success that can make his own failures harder to ignore. The film understands that contradiction, but gives Mahendra’s insecurity the more consequential journey.
What is Mr. & Mrs. Mahi about?
Sharan Sharma’s Hindi drama follows Mahendra “Mahi” Aggarwal, an unsuccessful local cricketer who marries Mahima “Mahi” Aggarwal in an arranged match. When he recognizes her ability, he takes on coaching her. What begins as an apparent second chance for Mahendra becomes a test of whether he can help his wife claim a sporting ambition without needing to remain at the center of it.
That setup makes the film more than a competition story. Cricket gives the couple a shared pursuit, but the relationship supplies the stakes: Mahima’s prospects rise at the same time Mahendra has to face what her success means for his own sense of worth.
Does the film make them partners between equals?
There is a real partnership in the coaching premise. Mahendra sees a talent Mahima has not yet fully trusted, and their work on the training pitch gives their relationship a physical language: learning, repetition and movement in tandem. In his June 2, 2024 review for The Guardian, Mike McCahill singles out an image of their feet moving in unison as a visual expression of teamwork. He calls the turn toward Mahima’s cricket ambition “a small monument to partnership building.”

But the film’s idea of equality is more complicated than the shared training suggests. Mahendra’s support is genuine, yet her increasing promise unsettles him. The coaching arrangement cannot stay a simple act of generosity once Mahima’s career begins to eclipse the dream he failed to realize. McCahill describes that prospect as a “marital eclipse” and reads Mahendra’s petulance as part of the film’s examination of masculinity.
This tension gives the marriage drama its most interesting material: a partner can help open a door and still struggle when the other person walks through it. Yet the emotional emphasis falls more heavily on Mahendra’s response than on the ongoing process of Mahima becoming an athlete on her own terms. Their partnership is the premise; his ability to tolerate its changing balance is the more consequential arc.

How well does the relationship drama work?
The film’s emotional center is its best case for the story. Mahendra’s pride and insecurity pull in opposite directions, so his coaching is not uncomplicated altruism. That friction keeps the relationship from becoming a straightforward tale of a husband selflessly discovering his wife’s potential. McCahill finds an emotional heartbeat in the material, particularly in the way interpersonal tensions are woven into the training story.
The limitation is that Mahima’s ambition can feel more like the catalyst for Mahendra’s reckoning than an equally developed inner journey. Her hesitation—about facing a short ball and about the plausibility of a professional career—offers a starting point, but a film about a partnership between equals needs to make her changing hopes and choices feel as substantial as his. The central question is not only whether he can support her; it is what she wants when the dream becomes hers.

Does the cricket feel convincing?
Cricket gives the film useful detail and a clear visual vocabulary for teamwork, discipline and pressure. McCahill praises Kapoor’s committed playing and the cricket material, while the training sequences help make the couple’s shared effort legible. The sports story is most effective when practice also reveals something about how the two relate to each other.
That emphasis on the relationship, however, means the film’s sporting ambitions and its domestic drama do not always carry equal weight. Rotten Tomatoes’ review excerpts reflect that divide: they include praise for emotional scenes and Rajkummar Rao’s performance alongside the criticism that the film is neither a convincing sports film nor an effective relationship drama. The split is a useful description of the risk in the design, even if it is not a definitive verdict on the film.

Performances, direction and release details
Rajkummar Rao plays Mahendra, with Janhvi Kapoor as Mahima. Their characters share the “Mahi” nickname, a small detail that suits a story about identities intertwined but not interchangeable. Rao’s performance has room to make Mahendra’s wounded pride frustrating as well as recognizable; Kapoor’s committed cricket playing lends credibility to Mahima’s pursuit, even where the script gives her less interior space than the premise invites.
Sharan Sharma directed and co-wrote the film with Nikhil Mehrotra. Mr. & Mrs. Mahi opened in cinemas on May 31, 2024. Rotten Tomatoes lists it as a Hindi drama, romance and sports film with a runtime of 2 hours 17 minutes. Its streaming listing names Netflix, but availability can differ by territory and change over time; check the service in your region.
