There was real deal activity around MrBeast and bids for TikTok’s U.S. operations, but the evidence does not show that he personally made or completed a purchase offer. In January 2025, investor groups publicly sought to involve him; his spokesperson said he had not officially joined a bid and had no exclusive agreement with any buyer. TikTok later announced that its U.S. business had entered a joint venture established in January 2026.
What did MrBeast actually say?
In January 2025, Jimmy Donaldson—known as MrBeast—posted that he would “buy TikTok so it doesn’t get banned.” The next day, he wrote that billionaires had reached out after the post and said, “let’s see if we can pull this off,” according to the Associated Press.
Those posts explain why the idea was widely framed as a stunt or a serious possibility. They do not, by themselves, establish that he made a binding offer, committed money, or agreed to buy TikTok.
What was real about the reported bids?
The January 2025 reporting concerned TikTok’s U.S. operations, not the worldwide platform. Two separate investor groups entered the public conversation, and reports about MrBeast’s involvement did not amount to proof that he had formally committed to either one.

Jesse Tinsley’s investor group
Jesse Tinsley, founder and CEO of Employer.com, led an investor group publicly associated with an all-cash offer for TikTok’s U.S. operations. The Guardian reported on January 22, 2025, that MrBeast had joined the bid. The offer amount was not disclosed, and the reviewed reporting did not establish its price.
That account was qualified by MrBeast’s representative. The Associated Press reported on January 22 that Tinsley’s post and a Paul Hastings announcement identified Donaldson, while spokesperson Matthew Hiltzik said he had not officially joined any bid. Hiltzik told AP: “Several buyers are holding ongoing discussions with Jimmy. He has no exclusive agreements with any of them.”

Frank McCourt’s group
TechCrunch reported on January 23, 2025, that Donaldson was in talks with Frank McCourt’s group, but that no official agreement had been entered. This was a separate set of discussions from the Tinsley-led offer; the public reports do not provide a complete, comparable term sheet for the two groups.
The most precise description is that MrBeast was publicly named in bid activity and was in discussions with potential buyers. The reports do not establish that he led either group, personally financed an offer, or formally committed to a purchase.

What happened to TikTok’s U.S. business afterward?
In a statement on April 4, 2025, ByteDance said: “An agreement has not been executed. There are key matters to be resolved.” It added that any agreement would be subject to approval under Chinese law. That statement described the status at that date; it did not settle what would happen later.
A September 25, 2025, U.S. executive order described a proposed qualified divestiture under which a new U.S. joint venture would operate TikTok’s U.S. application. The order set out a framework for ByteDance to hold less than 20% and described safeguards involving U.S. data, algorithm operations, content moderation, monitoring, and retraining. Those were the order’s framework and findings.

On January 23, 2026, TikTok announced that TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC “has been established in compliance with the Executive Order signed by President Trump on September 25, 2025.” The company named Silver Lake, Oracle, and MGX as managing investors, each holding 15%, and said ByteDance retained 19.9%. Its announcement also described safeguards for U.S. data, the app, and the algorithm. Those safeguards are the company’s description, not an independent security audit.

So, was it “not just a stunt”?
It was more than a social-media joke in the limited sense that investors pursued bids and publicly discussed MrBeast’s participation. But the public record described here does not show that he personally made or completed a purchase offer. The later U.S. joint venture was announced with Silver Lake, Oracle, and MGX as managing investors; the announcement does not identify MrBeast as one of them.
