Sigmund Freud’s best-known books include The Interpretation of Dreams, The Psychopathology of Everyday Life, Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality, Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious, Beyond the Pleasure Principle, The Ego and the Id, and Civilization and Its Discontents. This is a source-led selection of major works, not a definitive ranking: the cited institutions do not establish an objective list of the most famous books.
Where to start with Freud
For a first encounter with Freud’s writing, start with The Interpretation of Dreams. The Library of Congress describes it as marking the beginning of psychoanalysis, and the Freud Museum London includes it among Freud’s major works. It introduces his approach to dreams while also developing ideas about the mind and psychoanalytic method.
After that, choose by subject rather than trying to follow a single required sequence. Freud’s books range from early clinical work to later theories of the mind and writing about culture and religion.

Which Freud book should you read next?
For everyday behavior
Choose The Psychopathology of Everyday Life if you are curious about how Freud interpreted ordinary slips and other familiar events. Read it as Freud’s account of these phenomena, not as a neutral guide to how contemporary psychology explains them.
#1 Best Overall
For Freud’s ideas about sexuality
Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality is the relevant major work. English title conventions differ: the Library of Congress lists it as Three Contributions to the Theory of Sexuality.
For humor and the unconscious
Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious extends Freud’s interest in how mental processes may appear in everyday life, this time through jokes and humor.
Rank #2
For later theories of the mind
Read Beyond the Pleasure Principle or The Ego and the Id to explore later stages of Freud’s theoretical writing. They are useful choices for readers interested in how his ideas developed beyond his early work.
For culture and religion
Civilization and Its Discontents considers the relationship between individual life and civilization. The Future of an Illusion is another possible choice for readers interested in Freud’s writing on religion; the Library of Congress chronology also dates the late cultural and religious work Moses and Monotheism to 1939.

Why The Interpretation of Dreams became so influential
The Library of Congress exhibition calls The Interpretation of Dreams a work that “marks the beginning of psychoanalysis.” Its account describes a book that combines method and results with autobiography and speculation about the mind. That mix helps explain its place in Freud’s intellectual legacy: it is both a statement of an emerging approach and an argument about how to understand dreams.
Influence is not the same as proof. The Library of Congress exhibition also records criticism of the evidential strength of Freud’s dream theory. The book’s historical importance does not establish that its claims are accepted as contemporary empirical findings. The sources cited here do not settle the present-day evidence for each of Freud’s theories.
How to choose an edition
Freud’s works have publication and revision histories. The Library of Congress Rare Book Collection describes holdings that include first editions and later editions with textual revisions. When selecting an edition, compare the translation, editorial notes, and publication details. The cited sources do not provide a comparative assessment of current translations or their readability.

Dates can differ across institutional accounts, and translated titles may vary. For The Interpretation of Dreams, the Library of Congress timeline gives 1899–1900 while the Freud Museum London lists 1900. For Civilization and Its Discontents, the Library of Congress gives 1930 and the Freud Museum London gives 1931. Those sources do not resolve the reason for the latter difference, so it is best to retain the attribution rather than present one date as definitive.
