What is Module 1 Music 7 Quarter 3?
It is the first module in the Department of Education’s Grade 7 Quarter 3 Music self-learning module collection, categorized as Music of Mindanao. DepEd’s official listing gives Module 1 the title “The Beauty and Elegance of the South Vocal Music of Muslim Filipinos” and identifies educators and learners as the collection’s intended users. The listing was published August 2, 2022. View the official DepEd LRMDS listing.
The title points to a focused subject: vocal music of Muslim Filipinos in Mindanao. It is not a general guide to every musical tradition in the region. The larger Quarter 3 collection includes separate modules on other subjects, including kulintang, bamboo ensemble instrumental music, Christian music of Zamboanga, Subanen-Lumad music, Mamanwa-Manobo music, and Tausug music.
What does the module teach?
The central task is to listen and recognize characteristics of Mindanao Islamic vocal music, then relate what is heard to the region’s cultural and geographical background. Learners are also asked to distinguish musical elements in this vocal music and compare it with vocal music from the Luzon and Visayas lowlands and other Philippine ethnic groups, according to DepEd’s listing.

Those objectives make listening and comparison more important than memorizing a list of songs or instruments. A useful way to approach a selection is to notice its audible musical elements first, then consider how the music relates to its cultural and regional setting. The listing describes these goals but does not provide detailed examples or prescribe particular musical differences; those specifics should be taken from the module’s lessons and listening materials.
How does Module 1 fit into the Quarter 3 collection?
Module 1 is the collection’s introduction to the vocal music of Muslim Filipinos in Mindanao. The broader collection has additional competencies that include listening to representative selections, identifying musical characteristics and instruments, analyzing musical elements, improvising simple rhythmic or melodic accompaniment, performing music or improvised instruments, and evaluating selections or performances. These are collection-level aims, not requirements unique to Module 1.
