What happened at the Morrison Hotel?
A fire broke out at the four-story former hotel on December 26, 2024. The Associated Press reported that more than 100 firefighters brought it under control after nearly two hours. Several people escaped, including three rescued from the third floor. AP reported no injuries in its account. The roof collapsed, leaving the building’s structural integrity in doubt. The Associated Press reported on the fire on December 27, 2024.
In a January 3, 2025 report, the Los Angeles Times said the building remained standing, but its wooden interior had been severely damaged. Investigators had not determined the fire’s cause at that point. That is a report of the building’s condition shortly after the fire, not confirmation of its present condition. Why is the building famous?
The hotel became recognizable to music fans through the cover of The Doors’ fifth album, Morrison Hotel, released in 1970. Photographer Henry Diltz took the cover image at the South Hope Street building in 1969. The Los Angeles Times describes an improvised lobby photo session involving Diltz, his business partner Gary Burden, keyboardist Ray Manzarek and Jim Morrison; the band entered when the clerk was away, and Diltz photographed them through the front window.

Diltz later recalled the building as “a great old wooden building with many small rooms upstairs where transients and drinkers could sleep it off on a cot for $2.50 a night!” The quoted rate is a historical recollection, not a current price, and the source does not precisely date it. The Los Angeles Times’ account of the album-cover photograph recounts the session and the hotel’s history.
Was the January 7, 2025 fire the same incident?
No source cited here establishes that it was. The Los Angeles Fire Department’s January 7 update concerns a greater-alarm fire at 1224 S Hope St. It says 12 fire companies responded and that fire breached a dividing wall into an adjacent exposed building; it does not identify the Morrison Hotel as the primary building. What was planned for the property after the fire?
In its January 3, 2025 report, the Los Angeles Times said AIDS Healthcare Foundation had bought the property in December 2023 for $12.4 million and planned to create 111 affordable housing units. The building had reportedly been vacant since 2006, following a tenant relocation settlement. After the fire, the owner said it was waiting for a structural engineer’s report before deciding whether and how the hotel could be salvaged. These were plans and a pending assessment reported in January 2025—not proof that the housing project proceeded or that the building was saved.
The same Times report described at least six LAFD calls for service at the site since December 2023, including a rubbish fire, smoke and follow-up investigations. Preservationist Kim Cooper told the newspaper: “The whole world suddenly is interested in preservation when it’s something they feel emotionally attached to,” reflecting the tension between the hotel’s cultural significance and the practical question of what its damaged structure could support.

Is the Morrison Hotel still standing or being restored?
The latest condition established by the sources cited here is the Los Angeles Times report of January 3, 2025: the building was still standing, its wooden interior was badly damaged, and the owner was awaiting an engineer’s assessment. Those sources do not verify whether the building was later stabilized, restored, demolished or put into construction. They also do not establish its current ownership or present safety status.
