At the November 14, 2019 Latin Grammys in Las Vegas, Mon Laferte opened her coat on the red carpet to reveal the words “En Chile torturan, violan y matan” (“In Chile they torture, rape and kill”). She said the protest was meant to draw attention to anger over inequality and the social problems behind Chile’s demonstrations.
What did Mon Laferte write on her chest?
Laferte’s message read “En Chile torturan, violan y matan”—“In Chile they torture, rape and kill.” It was a forceful protest slogan, not a quotation from an investigation or a court finding. Contemporary coverage reported that she opened a black coat to show the words on the Latin Grammys red carpet. The Guardian’s November 15, 2019 report and People en Español’s coverage described the moment.
Why did she protest?
In a BBC World Service interview, as reported by BioBioChile on November 18, 2019, Laferte connected the demonstrations to inequality. She said, “Toda la sociedad chilena está furiosa por la desigualdad (existente en el país)”—“All Chilean society is furious about the inequality that exists in the country.” She described the aim of the demonstrations as “intentar solucionar los problemas sociales,” or “trying to solve social problems.”
Laferte also spoke about her personal connection to social vulnerability. In the same interview report, she described being born during the dictatorship in a poor coastal neighborhood and her family’s financial hardship. She said that taking part in the demonstrations at the ceremony felt like a natural step in light of her own experience.

What was happening in Chile in November 2019?
The protests began amid anger over political exclusion and economic inequality. A subway-fare increase helped trigger demonstrations, which grew into broader demands for social change. The Guardian’s account on November 15, 2019 said more than 20 people had died in the unrest by that date, with at least five deaths attributed to state forces. The report also described accusations of torture, rape and indiscriminate violence by state forces; these were reported allegations, not findings established by the protest slogan.

How did the protest fit into the award ceremony?
Laferte won the 2019 Latin Grammy for Best Alternative Album for Norma. In her acceptance remarks, she dedicated attention to Chile and read a décima given to her by Chilean cantora La Chinganera, according to RTVE’s November 15, 2019 coverage. The poem begins, “Chile, me dueles por dentro, me sangras por cada vena,” (“Chile, you hurt me inside, you bleed through every vein”) and ends, “No detendrán nuestra lucha, hasta que se haga justicia” (“They will not stop our struggle until justice is done”).
The red-carpet image and her acceptance remarks used a high-profile international ceremony to focus attention on the crisis and the demands behind the demonstrations. Her own explanation emphasized inequality, social anger and the need to address social problems.
