Mona Patel made her Met Gala debut in 2024 wearing a custom Iris van Herpen couture gown styled by Law Roach, alongside a separate kinetic arm piece created in collaboration with artist Casey Curran. The dramatic moving details drew attention to Patel—and prompted questions about the Indian entrepreneur and philanthropist behind the look.
The 2024 Met Gala look: gown and arm piece
The gala’s “Garden of Time” theme shaped Patel’s bespoke look. Vogue described a nude-toned, floor-length sculpted gown with a butterfly-shaped corset and scalloped train, hand-embroidered in India according to Patel’s vision. Vogue connected the design to the theme and reported that Roach styled her appearance. Vogue India’s account of Patel’s Met Gala look gives further detail.
The moving arm detail was a distinct accessory, not part of the gown’s construction. Patel collaborated with artist Casey Curran on the kinetic piece. Vogue described its moving forms as flower petals; other coverage has called them butterfly wings or mechanical butterflies. Those descriptions reflect how publications characterized the motion and design, rather than an independent examination of its mechanism.
Accounts differ on the precise production timeline. Vogue India said Curran began about a month before the gala and finished the arm piece the day before the red carpet; British Vogue described work beginning months ahead. The safe common ground is that the accessory was developed in the weeks or months leading up to the event.

Patel told Vogue India: “I wanted my debut look to be something that celebrates my heritage and also combines my love couture, and when I heard of the theme, Iris Van Herpen seemed like the obvious choice,” Patel told the Vogue India team in March earlier this year.

Her philanthropy and Couture For Cause
Vogue associates Patel’s philanthropy with Couture For Cause and reports that couture auctions have been used as a fundraising activity. That account does not establish the organization’s current legal or financial status, nor does it provide a fundraising total. It is best understood as Vogue’s description of Patel’s charitable work, not a verified statement of current operations.
What happened to the butterfly cuff after the gala?
Patel wore the Iris van Herpen butterfly cuff again at Vogue India’s Forces of Fashion event in October 2024. Vogue India described the piece’s wings opening and closing rhythmically, giving the accessory a life beyond its debut on the Met Gala carpet. Vogue India’s Forces of Fashion coverage reports on the rewear.

Patel’s later perspective on fashion
In an interview updated September 22, 2026, Esquire India quoted Patel describing fashion as a collaborative practice: “Fashion is never the work of one person; every memorable moment is an act of collective genius.” The remark resonates with a look involving a couture house, stylist, wearer, and kinetic-accessory collaborator, while not specifying the exact division of work on the gown. In the same interview, she discussed The Other AI Lab and said “AI” there stands for “Aesthetic Intelligence.” Read the Esquire India interview.
