There is no defensible, publicly documented ranking of the six films with the most expensive CGI. The figures available for prominent effects-heavy movies measure different things: one is a reported whole-film budget, another is a combined budget for two films, and a studio’s shot count documents workload—not spending. Calling any of these a CGI budget would overstate what the evidence shows.
Why there is no reliable six-film CGI-cost ranking
A ranking needs comparable, attributable figures for each film’s visual-effects spending. The available sources do not provide them: they describe overall production budgets, effects work, or a multi-film budget without disclosing a film-specific CGI allocation. Nor do they identify six films with comparable, sourced effects costs.
That distinction matters because “movie budget” usually refers to the production as a whole, not just computer-generated imagery. A film’s total may cover many kinds of production costs, while a visual-effects figure would need to isolate that work. The sources here do not establish a common accounting method, currency basis, or production period for a six-film comparison.
What the available figures actually tell us
| Film or films | What is reported | What it does—and does not—measure |
|---|---|---|
| Avatar: The Way of Water | TIME reported an overall production cost of $350 million in 2022, attributing the estimate to Variety. | A reported whole-film cost, not a CGI-only budget. TIME noted that a definitive exact cost was not publicly available. TIME, 2022 |
| Avengers: Endgame | Framestore says it delivered over 300 VFX shots for the film. | A studio-reported measure of effects work, not expenditure. The page describes work involving Smart Hulk, Rocket, environments, and effects. Framestore project page |
| Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame | VFX Voice described their combined budget as approximately $675 million in 2019 and said visual effects accounted for a significant portion. | A combined figure for two films, not an individual budget for either one and not an exact VFX allocation. VFX Voice, 2019 |
What the production accounts show about effects
Avatar: The Way of Water: scale is not a cost breakdown
TIME’s report places the film’s extensive production, including advanced motion capture, in context with its reported overall cost. It does not say how much of that amount went to CGI or visual effects. The $350 million estimate therefore cannot be used as the film’s effects budget or compared directly with a VFX-only figure.

Avengers: Endgame: documented work, undisclosed spend
Marvel’s official behind-the-scenes feature explains how visual effects transformed Mark Ruffalo into Smart Hulk. It documents a specific creative and technical contribution, but supplies no VFX budget. Marvel’s feature on the Smart Hulk transformation also references Blu-ray bonus material.
Framestore’s project page gives a concrete sense of the work’s scope: the vendor says it delivered over 300 shots, including work on characters, environments, and effects. That figure is useful for understanding production scale, but shot count alone cannot establish cost. Shots can differ substantially in complexity, and the page does not attach a price to them.

VFX Voice’s approximately $675 million figure covers the combined budgets of Infinity War and Endgame. Its description of visual effects as a significant portion does not specify an exact amount or a per-film allocation. Splitting that combined budget—or its effects share—between the two movies would require evidence the article does not provide.
Jurassic World: effects in service of the story
The Directors Guild of America’s 2019 discussion of Jurassic World offers a different kind of evidence: how the filmmakers thought about effects. Director Colin Trevorrow said, “My background as a writer of studio movies prepared me for Jurassic World as much as anything else, because I understood how to use visual effects to move the story forward and nothing more.” The DGA article discusses the effects work but does not publish a VFX-only cost.

How to evaluate a claim about a movie’s CGI budget
- Check the cost scope. Is the figure for the whole film, VFX alone, or multiple films together?
- Identify who reported it and when. A press estimate, a studio statement, and a vendor’s production account are different kinds of evidence.
- Look for the accounting basis. Figures may cover different production periods or categories, making them unsuitable for direct comparison.
- Keep workload separate from money. Shot counts, digital characters, and elaborate environments describe effects scope; they do not reveal expenditure.
- Require a figure for every film. A six-film ranking is only meaningful if each entry has an attributable cost measured on a comparable basis.
What a credible ranking would require
A defensible list would need a sourced VFX-only cost for each film, a clear definition of which effects work and production periods are included, and a consistent way to treat currency and shared productions. It would also need to distinguish confirmed disclosures from reported estimates. The available material does not establish those conditions or name six qualifying films, so it supports examples of effects work—not a ranked list of the most expensive movie CGIs.
