Later interviews show how her career continued: in a 2026 Guitar World interview, Dey said she was 29 and had joined the progressive-rock project DarWin in 2022.
What the 2018 profile says about Mohini Dey
Scroll.in’s April 4, 2018 profile presented Dey as one of India’s youngest female bassists and described her performing at the NAMM show and Bass Bash that January. Its available excerpt also places her early musical development in a family environment where music was central, while noting that balancing academics and music was challenging. These details belong to the 2018 account; they should not be mistaken for a complete biography or a transcript of the interview. Read the Scroll.in profile.
How an early meeting with Ranjit Barot became a turning point
The Scroll.in excerpt identifies an encounter with drummer, arranger, producer, singer and composer Ranjit Barot as a moment that changed the course of Dey’s life. At their first meeting, she picked up a bass and played a couple of Victor Wooten tunes. The excerpt does not provide further detail about the meeting, so its significance is best understood through the profile’s own description rather than embellished with a reconstructed story.
Her professional start: why sources say nine or ten
The reported age at which Dey began working professionally differs by one year. NAMM’s profile describes her as playing professionally since she was ten; in a January 2026 Guitar World interview, Dey said she had been working professionally since nine. The available records do not resolve the discrepancy, so neither figure should be presented as an uncontested date. NAMM’s oral history record and Guitar World’s 2026 interview preserve the separate accounts.

From early gigs to DarWin
Dey’s later account offers a view of a career beyond the youthful framing of the 2018 profile. She told Guitar World that early work with Bollywood artists and later opportunities involving A. R. Rahman and MTV India opened doors. She also said she joined DarWin in 2022. Describing what appealed to her about the project, she pointed to its pop and jazz elements, its attention to song and story, and the experience of recording bass and drums live in the same room. These are her reflections in the 2026 interview, not details attributed to the 2018 Scroll.in profile.
What Dey’s craft means in the later interview
Dey’s career story is not only a question of early recognition; it also involves moving among different musical settings and collaborators. Her comments about DarWin emphasize ensemble work and serving a song’s structure, alongside the technical identity associated with bass playing. Guitarist Greg Howe, discussing Dey in the same Guitar World feature, praised her distinctive playing: “Mohini is phenomenal. She does things on bass I’ve simply never heard done before.”

Gear she used on Distorted Mirror
For the recording of Distorted Mirror, Dey named a Mayones Comodous Classic 5 bass and a Markbass Standard 104HF cabinet with a Little Mark 800 head. This is the setup she reported using for that album, not evidence that it is her one permanent or current rig. The interview does not establish the gear’s present availability or recommend it as a beginner setup.
