Accounts differ on the confrontation: Sibrel described an ambush interview and an unexpected punch, while Aldrin’s publicist said Aldrin acted to protect himself and his stepdaughter.
What happened outside the hotel?
The encounter took place outside the Luxe Hotel in Beverly Hills. According to HISTORY’s account, Sibrel accused Aldrin of lying about walking on the Moon. Aldrin told him to get away; after Sibrel called him a coward, liar and thief, Aldrin punched him in the jaw. The filmed confrontation became widely known through video of the incident.

Sibrel was a filmmaker who sought to argue that American astronauts, including Aldrin, had not landed on or walked on the Moon. CBS reported that the footage was intended for a Sibrel film claiming Apollo 11 footage had been faked. The Los Angeles Times described it as at least the second confrontation between the men; Aldrin’s wife, Lois, said they had also encountered Sibrel during Aldrin’s book tour.
Why did Aldrin hit Sibrel?
The immediate trigger was Sibrel’s challenge to Aldrin’s account of walking on the Moon, delivered during an attempted filmed confrontation. Sibrel demanded that Aldrin swear on a Bible that he had been there. CBS reported Sibrel’s account of the incident: “I was very surprised that he hit me, I thought it was very foolish of him to do it in front of two video cameras.”

Aldrin’s publicist, Robert O’Brien, offered a different explanation in a prepared statement: “Buzz Aldrin was forced to protect himself and his stepdaughter when he was aggressively confronted outside a Beverly Hills hotel.” That was the publicist’s characterization, not a finding established by the statement itself.
CBS also reported that a police spokesman said witnesses had come forward claiming Sibrel aggressively poked Aldrin with a Bible and had lured him to the hotel under false pretenses. These reported witness accounts help explain why Aldrin’s side described the encounter as aggressive, but they should not be confused with a court finding.

What happened after the punch?
When CBS reported on September 11, 2002, police were still investigating and had not yet spoken with Aldrin. The report said the results would be sent to the district attorney to determine whether to take action. HISTORY later reported that Sibrel tried to press assault charges, but that the case was thrown out and Sibrel was called the instigator. The underlying docket or ruling is not available in the accounts cited here, so the disposition should not be described as a criminal conviction or treated as a complete account of the court’s reasoning.

Aldrin was the Apollo 11 lunar module pilot and the second human to set foot on the Moon, as identified in NASA’s transcript of a July 16, 1999 Apollo 11 anniversary press conference. The transcript’s moderator, Lisa Malone, said six Apollo missions landed on the Moon, twelve people walked on its surface, and the missions returned 852 pounds of lunar samples.

The challenge Sibrel made was part of a broader campaign to deny the Moon landings. In November 2002, The Guardian summarized NASA’s public responses to common claims: the flag moved as astronauts twisted its pole into the lunar soil, and photographs exposed for the bright Earth made dim stars difficult to capture. That summary is context for the dispute, not a technical treatment of lunar photography or flag motion.

How to understand the competing accounts
- What is clear: the confrontation happened on September 9, 2002, outside a Beverly Hills hotel, and Aldrin punched Sibrel during the encounter.
- Sibrel’s account: he said the encounter was an ambush-style interview and that Aldrin unexpectedly hit him.
- Aldrin’s side: his publicist said he was protecting himself and his stepdaughter; CBS separately reported witnesses’ claims about Sibrel’s aggressive approach.
- What the available reports do not establish: a full court record or an independently adjudicated account of every detail of the confrontation.
