Its subject is deliberately unsettling, and the teacher-student power imbalance is central—not an uncomplicated romance. Whether to watch depends on your comfort with that material and whether the film’s execution works for you: the available response includes a sharply critical Associated Press review, but it does not establish a broader consensus.
What is Miller’s Girl about?
Jenna Ortega plays Cairo Sweet, a high-school student whose writing assignment brings her into a dangerous liaison with her teacher, Jonathan Miller, played by Martin Freeman. Jade Halley Bartlett wrote and directed the film. The story’s central tension comes from the boundary-crossing relationship between a student and an adult teacher, with the assignment serving as its catalyst. Netflix’s overview describes the relationship as controversial, while Lionsgate’s trailer presents the writing assignment as the point where lines begin to blur.
The supporting cast includes Dagmara Domińczyk, Bashir Salahuddin, Gideon Adlon, and Christine Adams, according to Netflix Tudum. Lionsgate’s official trailer was published December 13, 2023; it said the film would open in theaters January 26.
What content should viewers expect?
Miller’s Girl is rated R for sexual content, language throughout, and some teen smoking and drinking. Apple TV’s U.S. listing gives its running time as 1 hour 33 minutes. Those details may help viewers decide whether its subject matter and content are a fit; the R rating itself does not tell you how the film handles the teacher-student dynamic.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That dynamic involves an adult teacher and a high-school student, so the power imbalance is part of the premise, not a side issue. Viewers looking for a straightforward or affirming romance may find the framing uncomfortable.
Does the film’s morally ambiguous approach work?
Writer-director Bartlett has described her interest in avoiding simple moral categories. In Netflix Tudum’s discussion of the film, which attributes the statement to an interview with Forbes, Bartlett says: “No one is a perfect villain or a perfect victim. They don’t exist.” That is her stated perspective on the characters; it does not, by itself, show that the film’s treatment of the relationship succeeds.

The available critical response cited here is strongly negative but should be read as one critic’s view, not a consensus. In his January 24, 2024 review for the Associated Press, Mark Kennedy calls the film an “airless, cold affair” in the headline and questions how it handles its subject. The review gives viewers a reason to be cautious about the execution, but the evidence here does not establish an overall critical or audience verdict.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you watch it on Netflix?
Consider watching if you are interested in a psychological thriller built around a provocative teacher-student relationship and are comfortable with sexual content and morally fraught material. Consider skipping it if that power imbalance is a hard boundary for you, or if you want a film whose handling of the subject is clearly endorsed by the critical response available here. This is a content-and-execution choice, not a blanket verdict that the film is unsuitable for everyone.
