Mila Kunis and Macaulay Culkin were reported to have begun dating in 2002. Their relationship stayed largely private, and its end was announced publicly on January 3, 2011, after they had reportedly split earlier. Accounts describe it as lasting either seven or eight years; the exact start and breakup dates were never established publicly.

- 2002 — Reported beginning. Contemporary breakup coverage said Kunis and Culkin began dating that year, but did not identify an exact date or how they met. CBS News
- January 26, 2003 — Public appearance. An ABC News photo caption identifies the pair at the Motorola and Air Party in Park City, Utah. ABC News
- October 15, 2005 — Charity event. TIME’s caption places them together at the launch of the uBid for Hurricane Relief charity auction in Las Vegas. TIME
- September 18, 2007 — Kunis talks about their private life. In an interview with Parade, Kunis described everyday activities they enjoyed together and pushed back on speculation about engagement. She said, “We’re incredibly private, and I think we relish the privacy we do actually have and are able to sustain it.” Parade
- 2009 — A brief description of their shared history. Kunis said, “We grew up together,” in a Women’s Health interview, according to the Los Angeles Times. Los Angeles Times
- January 3, 2011 — Breakup announced. Kunis’s representative told CBS News, “The split was amicable, and they remain close friends.” The report said the couple had separated privately some time earlier and kept the news quiet while Kunis promoted Black Swan. It did not give the date of the private breakup. CBS News
- July 20, 2016 — Kunis recalls the attention Culkin drew. In coverage of her Howard Stern interview, TIME quoted Kunis saying, “You couldn’t walk down the street with him,” and that the response was “not like a normal response to a celebrity.” TIME
- July 24, 2018 — Kunis reflects on the breakup. On the Armchair Expert podcast, Kunis said she regretted how she handled the split and needed time to understand herself. ABC News reproduced her comments with profanity partially censored; they were a personal reflection, not a definitive account of every factor in the breakup. ABC News
Did they date for seven or eight years?
Published accounts differ. CBS News and the Los Angeles Times described the relationship as lasting about seven years in their January 3, 2011 reports. In 2018, ABC News described eight years from 2002 to early 2011, while Elle described eight years from 2002 to 2010. Because neither the precise beginning nor the private separation date was made public, these figures are differing summaries rather than an exact, verified duration.
What is known about why they broke up?
Kunis later said she regretted how she behaved during the breakup and described needing time to work out who she was. That is her account of her own conduct, not proof that it was the sole cause of the separation. The contemporary announcement called the split amicable and said the two remained close friends; the cited accounts do not establish a definitive reason for the breakup.
