Its rough edges can feel purposeful—an album about dismantling and rebuilding—or, depending on the listener, like familiar slow jams and uneven pacing. The strongest case for it lies in the tension between those readings.
What is CAOS?
CAOS is Miguel’s fifth album and his first full-length release in eight years, following 2017’s War & Leisure. AllMusic lists 12 tracks and a total runtime of 36:49, and classifies the record as R&B / contemporary R&B. Pitchfork categorizes it as Pop/R&B and lists ByStorm Entertainment / RCA.
The reported release date differs by one day across coverage: AllMusic lists October 24, 2025, while Rated R&B says it arrived October 23, 2025, on Miguel’s 40th birthday. The discrepancy is unresolved, so the exact date depends on the source or edition.
How the reviews differ
Voice and production: a shared strength
Pitchfork’s Alfred Soto hears little interest in breaking new ground, but praises Miguel’s vocal range and studio experimentation. AllMusic’s Andy Kellman likewise finds that Miguel’s voice can enliven material that otherwise feels less distinctive. These are not claims that every song lands; they point to the album’s most consistent asset: Miguel’s ability to make its shifting textures feel expressive.

FLOOD’s A.D. Amorosi describes the record through its existential focus and dusky jazz-electro elements, industrial atmosphere, and distorted guitars. That palette gives the album a darker, rougher character than a straightforward return to polished slow jams.
Roughness: purposeful transformation or unevenness?
Rated R&B’s Keithan Samuels reads the unsettled quality as intentional: genre changes and roughness represent a process of deconstruction and renewal. The review gives the album 7/10, an individual outlet rating rather than a consensus score. Samuels also attributes this statement to Miguel: “To rebuild, I had to destroy myself. That is the core confrontation of CAOS.”

Pitchfork and AllMusic are more reserved about how consistently that approach works. Soto calls the album “elegant and poised” while also finding little appetite for reinvention. Kellman hears familiar slow-jam territory and a heavy mood, with some ballads blurring into torpor. In other words, an intentional mess can still feel like an uneven listen if its changes do not persuade you from song to song.

- “RIP”: Pitchfork singles it out as adventurous, a strong example of the record reaching beyond its familiar territory.
- “New Martyrs (Ride 4 U)” and “Always Time”: Soto identifies both as part of the album’s strongest stretch, where the vocal and production choices make a persuasive case for the record.
- “Nearsight [SID]”: Pitchfork hears a spare showcase for Miguel’s multitracked vocals; AllMusic styles the title “Nearsight (SID).”
- “El Pleito” and the middle stretch: Pitchfork says the sequence beginning here slows the album down, making pacing a central point of disagreement for listeners drawn to its more immediate highlights.
- “COMMA/KARMA”: Pitchfork names it among the album’s strengths; AllMusic identifies it as the George Clinton-assisted finale.
- “The Killing,” “Triggered,” and “Perderme”: AllMusic points to these as darker songs that contribute to the record’s weightier mood.
Who is likely to enjoy CAOS?
CAOS is most rewarding if you value Miguel’s vocal performance and want an R&B album willing to mix familiar slow-jam instincts with darker, more experimental textures. If you prefer a tightly paced sequence or want every stylistic turn to yield a distinct song, the middle stretch and the less vivid ballads may test your patience.
The central question is whether the album’s instability sounds like part of its subject or simply makes the listening experience less cohesive. Rated R&B emphasizes transformation; Pitchfork and AllMusic leave more room for the possibility that the same roughness also produces drag. The reviews therefore offer different ways into the record rather than one settled verdict.
