His wife, Christie Collbran Rinder, said he died of esophageal cancer at a hospice center in Palm Harbor, Florida.
Who was Mike Rinder?
Rinder spent years in senior roles at the Church of Scientology and served as its spokesman before leaving the organization in 2007. He later spoke publicly as a critic of Scientology. Accounts of alleged misconduct or organizational practices should be understood as claims made by Rinder and other speakers, not as judicial findings established by the sources cited here.

He appeared in the 2015 HBO documentary Going Clear, according to his publisher’s biography. His memoir, A Billion Years: My Escape From a Life in the Highest Ranks of Scientology, was published in 2022 and recounts his experience in and departure from the organization.
His work with Leah Remini
Rinder co-hosted and co-executive-produced Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath, an A&E documentary series that premiered in 2016. The series ran for three seasons and won Emmy Awards in 2017 and 2020, according to The Washington Post’s obituary.

In an August 14, 2019, post about the show, Rinder wrote, “It will be our last show on A&E.” The statement referred to the end of its A&E run, not necessarily every later form of distribution. He also noted that the Aftermath Foundation had grown out of the series.

Rinder disclosed an advanced esophageal cancer diagnosis in 2023, according to reporting by the Los Angeles Times. His wife identified esophageal cancer as the cause of death after he died in Palm Harbor, Florida, on January 5, 2025.
