Mike Tyson said he “just snapped” after a headbutt opened a cut above his right eye and he feared losing because of it. But he also said he could not explain exactly why he acted as he did. That is Tyson’s own account of his state of mind—not proof of every thought behind the bite.
What did Tyson say was going through his mind?
In a July 1997 apology, Tyson said a headbutt had opened a cut above his eye. He said he thought he might lose because of the cut’s severity, then “just snapped.” In his statement, reported by The Washington Post, he added: “I cannot tell you why, exactly, I acted like I did.”
Tyson also said, “But it’s not right and for me it doesn’t change anything. I was wrong.” His explanation connects the bite to the injury and his fear of losing, while acknowledging that he could not account for his reaction fully.
What happened in the fight?
The incident took place in the third round of the heavyweight title rematch in Las Vegas on June 28, 1997. Tyson bit Evander Holyfield’s right ear. The fight resumed, but Tyson then bit the other ear and was disqualified. The Guardian’s retrospective says Tyson was behind on points when the first bite happened: The Guardian, 2017.

Tyson’s prepared statement referred to the headbutt as happening in the first round, but the contemporaneous Washington Post report corrects that detail: it occurred in the second. Tyson’s round reference should not be treated as the chronology of the bout.
Does that explanation establish why he did it?
No. Tyson’s statement is the clearest contemporaneous account of what he said he was thinking: he feared losing because of the cut and reacted impulsively. It does not let anyone verify all his private thoughts at the time. Nor does the sequence of events establish that he intended to get disqualified or knew he would lose.

The Guardian’s retrospective records that referee Mills Lane regarded the headbutt as accidental. That is Lane’s view, not a ruling that resolves every clash in the bout. The same retrospective notes that Tyson gave various answers over the years, so later accounts should be understood as his recollections rather than independent confirmation of motive.

In a 2013 CNN interview, Tyson was asked what he thought when he saw footage of the incident. He answered: “I don’t know. I thought, man, I’m sorry. I really wish I didn’t do that.” Asked whether he meant it despite the incident becoming a joke to many people, he said: “Yes. I wish I didn’t do that.” The exchange appears in CNN’s interview transcript.
