NBC News Studios’ Dead Certain: The Martha Moxley Murder revisits the 1975 killing in a 12-episode series hosted by journalist Andrew Goldman. Announced for a November 4, 2025 premiere, the podcast examines the investigation, court proceedings and competing accounts surrounding the case. Its questions and allegations are the program’s framing—not new judicial findings.

What is the Martha Moxley podcast?

Dead Certain: The Martha Moxley Murder is an NBC News Studios podcast hosted by Andrew Goldman. NBC announced it on October 28, 2025, as a 12-episode series timed to the 50th anniversary of Moxley’s killing. NBC says Goldman conducted original reporting over a decade and interviewed Michael Skakel, who had not previously spoken publicly about the case. Those descriptions of the reporting and access are NBC’s claims. NBC’s announcement

The show’s announced participants include several of Moxley’s close friends, retired FBI agent Jim Murphy, Stephen Skakel and former LAPD detective Mark Fuhrman. Its episode descriptions cover the early investigation, attention to Tommy Skakel and tutor Ken Littleton, Michael Skakel’s trial, alleged confessions, defense strategy and appeals. These are topics the program says it addresses; an episode description does not establish the truth of a contested allegation. Apple Podcasts listing

What happened to Martha Moxley?

Moxley was 15 when she was killed in Greenwich, Connecticut, on October 30, 1975. Her body was found the following day beneath a tree on her family’s property in the Belle Haven neighborhood. The Connecticut Post’s case timeline says she was beaten to death with a golf club. Connecticut Post timeline

The investigation and subsequent legal proceedings stretched across decades, drawing sustained public and media attention. The podcast revisits that history, but its account should be read alongside the distinction between what courts decided and what participants or later investigators have alleged.

Was Michael Skakel retried?

No. A jury convicted Skakel of Moxley’s murder in 2002, but the conviction was vacated in 2018. The litigation included a dispute over defense counsel’s handling of a potential alibi witness; a Supreme Court filing recounts the procedural history and the state court’s conclusion about the failure to investigate that witness. Prosecutors announced in 2020 that they would not retry Skakel. CBS News case timeline Associated Press report Supreme Court filing

The accurate legal summary is therefore not that Skakel remains convicted: his 2002 conviction was vacated, and prosecutors declined to retry him. The podcast’s central question about who killed Moxley, and its discussion of possible alternate suspects, is a narrative inquiry rather than a court finding that Skakel was innocent or that another person was responsible.

How to assess the podcast’s claims

  • Separate legal outcomes from theories. The conviction, its vacatur and the no-retrial decision are procedural facts. Trial theories, defense arguments and later suspicions are distinct claims.
  • Check who is making a disputed claim. Identify whether an assertion comes from a participant, a lawyer, a journalist or the podcast’s own episode framing; do not treat an allegation as established simply because it is presented in a series.
  • Keep later allegations in context. An AP account of Skakel’s 2023 civil suit reported allegations involving an investigator and the town of Greenwich, and noted that responses or denials were not then available. The same report said Tommy Skakel denied involvement. Those suit allegations are not findings of fact in that report. Associated Press report

Why the series revisits the case now

NBC announced the podcast on October 28, 2025, just before the 50th anniversary of Moxley’s death. Its appeal is the combination of a long-running investigation, a consequential but later-vacated conviction, and interviews NBC says were conducted for Goldman’s reporting. The same combination makes careful listening important: access to a participant or a newly told account can add perspective, but it does not by itself resolve disputed evidence or change the legal record.
