That count records support for the petition; it does not itself revoke citizenship or establish legal grounds to do so.
What the petition said and how many people signed it
Qualia Reed of Nanaimo, British Columbia, initiated the House of Commons e-petition, which was sponsored by Charlie Angus, then the MP for Timmins—James Bay. It opened for signatures on February 20, 2025, and closed on June 20, 2025. The official House of Commons record displays 376,994 validated signatures and specifies that only validated signatures count.
The petition asked the Prime Minister to revoke Musk’s dual citizenship status and Canadian passport. Its stated grounds were allegations that Musk acted against Canada’s national interest, used wealth and power to influence elections, and became part of a foreign government allegedly seeking to erase Canadian sovereignty. These were the petitioners’ claims, not findings made by a court or the government.
Why reports cited a smaller number
An Axios report published February 25, 2025, described the petition as having more than 230,000 signers at that point. That was an early snapshot, not the final total. The available reporting does not establish the precise date the count passed 250,000.

Axios reported that Musk wrote, “Canada is not a real country,” in response to the petition. The remark was his response, not a government statement or a legal determination.

Can Canada revoke Musk’s citizenship?
Canadian law does not make a petition’s popularity a ground for taking away citizenship. Under the Citizenship Act, revocation applies when citizenship was obtained, retained, renounced, or resumed through false representation, fraud, or knowingly concealing material circumstances. The petition’s allegations about political influence or national interest do not, by themselves, establish those statutory grounds.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) describes a process that gives the person notice and a chance to respond. After a Request for Information letter, the person has an initial 30-day response period. If the process continues, a Notification Letter provides a further 60-day response period. The Federal Court makes the decision unless the person asks for the Minister to decide. These are procedural opportunities, not an automatic consequence of a petition.

Why a passport is a separate issue
A Canadian passport is not the same as citizenship, and passport revocation follows a separate administrative process. IRCC’s Passport Program guidance describes an investigation, disclosure of a summary of relevant information, an opportunity to respond, and a written decision. Its listed grounds include specified passport-related conduct and loss of Canadian citizenship.

What happened after the petition closed?
The House of Commons record establishes the petition’s closing date and final validated signature count. The available record does not establish a subsequent government decision or response, so the signature total should not be treated as evidence that Musk’s citizenship or passport was revoked.
