His family confirmed that complications from COVID-19 caused his death.
How Glenn Wheatley died
Wheatley died on Tuesday, 1 February 2022, in Melbourne. ABC News initially reported that he had reportedly died from complications from COVID-19; in a follow-up the same day, ABC said his family confirmed COVID-19 complications as the cause. ABC News’ initial report and its follow-up and tributes document the distinction.
From bassist to music manager
The Masters Apprentices
Wheatley first came to prominence as bassist for the 1960s Australian rock band the Masters Apprentices. The group’s hits included “Because I Love You” and “Turn Up Your Radio.” His career later moved from performing to guiding other artists’ work. ABC News’ obituary recounts both parts of his career.
Little River Band, John Farnham and Delta Goodrem
As a manager, Wheatley worked with the Little River Band and John Farnham, and helped launch Delta Goodrem’s career. His influence was largely behind the scenes: the available accounts establish his management and guidance, not that he performed on Farnham’s recordings. ABC News and the National Film and Sound Archive describe his association with Farnham.

Whispering Jack
A landmark project in that association was Farnham’s 1986 album Whispering Jack, released under Wheatley’s guidance. ABC describes it as the highest-selling album in Australia by an Australian artist, while the National Film and Sound Archive calls it a major turning point for Farnham. Those are the sources’ characterizations of the album’s standing; neither account here supplies a sales total. ABC News; NFSA.
His role in Australian radio
Wheatley also moved into commercial radio. ABC reports that he established EON in 1980, describing it as Melbourne’s first FM station, and that it later became Triple M. The account establishes this concise career milestone, rather than a detailed history of the station’s ownership. ABC News.
