The film builds an appealingly eerie premise and benefits from strong performances, but its uneven shifts between scares and jokes repeatedly soften the menace at the heart of that idea.
Munjya turns an obsession into a possession story
Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, the 123-minute Hindi film draws on a folk-tale framing associated with Maharashtra’s Konkan region: a boy dies soon after his thread ceremony and becomes a demon, lingering near a grove with an unfulfilled desire to marry. That is the film’s presentation of the story, not a verified account of regional belief. Scroll.in’s 2024 review identifies Yogesh Chandekar as story writer and Niren Bhat as screenplay writer.
The present-day link is Bittu (Abhay Verma), a descendant of the boy’s village who becomes the spirit’s reluctant vehicle. Bittu has feelings for his college friend Bela (Sharvari Wagh); Munjya redirects its fixation toward her. The setup gives the supernatural threat a disturbing human parallel: the spirit’s desire is not romance but entitlement, and possession becomes a literal expression of the control it wants over a woman.
That parallel is the film’s most promising idea, and also the measure of its missed opportunity. The story introduces stalking and possessiveness, but, as Nandini Ramnath argues in Scroll, does not give that dimension enough weight. When the movie steers toward lighter family entertainment, the frightening implications of Munjya’s fixation recede. The comedy does not consistently sharpen the contrast; at times, it simply makes the danger feel less consequential.

Why the horror-comedy balance falters
The early setup gives the film room to build tension from its Konkan setting and the sense that an old, unresolved desire has followed Bittu into the present. Priyanka Roy’s Telegraph India review likewise finds promise in the opening half-hour and praises the atmosphere. But Roy sees the film failing to sustain either chills or laughs as it goes on. Ramnath’s criticism is more specific about the abrupt movement into comedy and the delay in showing the full force of Munjya’s powers.
These are related problems rather than competing verdicts. If the spirit’s threat arrives too slowly and the jokes do not build a convincing comic rhythm, the film struggles to make either mode land. The supernatural plot has a clear engine—Munjya wants Bela—but the tonal shifts keep that pursuit from becoming steadily more frightening or more absurd. Roy also finds the thematic message thin, while Ramnath’s concern is that the story’s most unsettling theme loses relevance when the stalking is sidelined.

Performances provide the film’s strongest hold
Both reviews find value in the cast even as they question the writing and tonal control. Ramnath singles out Suhas Joshi and Abhay Verma; Roy praises Verma, Wagh, Mona Singh, S Sathyaraj and Joshi. Singh plays Bittu’s mother, Joshi his grandmother, and Bhagyashree Limaye his cousin. Bittu also seeks help from Diljit (Taran Singh) and psychic Karim Elvis (Sathyaraj), giving the story a group of characters to draw into its occult comedy.
Verma and Joshi are especially effective anchors for the film’s family-and-folklore side, while the wider ensemble helps keep the plot moving through its lighter stretches. Yet appealing performances cannot fully resolve a script that leaves the central menace underdeveloped. The characters have to carry a story whose strongest emotional and thematic conflict is not always allowed to dominate.

Where it fits in the horror-comedy universe
Munjya is positioned within the horror-comedy universe associated with Stree and Bhediya. Scroll reports a post-credits connection to those films, though Ramnath finds the link baffling. The franchise context may be a point of interest for viewers following that universe, but the connective tease does not compensate for the film’s tonal uncertainty or deepen its possessiveness theme.

Munjya is most compelling when its occult premise and its portrait of entitlement overlap: the spirit’s supernatural pursuit of Bela makes possession a vivid metaphor for possessiveness. Its atmosphere and cast give that idea a solid foundation. But the film’s shifts between horror and comedy, and its retreat from the uglier implications of stalking, blunt the force of both the scares and the theme. It is an engaging setup with memorable performers, not a horror-comedy that fully delivers on its menace or its jokes.
