Mufasa: The Lion King is a striking-looking prequel with moments of musical lift, but its origin story does not always turn franchise history into compelling drama. Barry Jenkins brings a distinct sensibility to a familiar world; the film’s photoreal computer-generated imagery and songs offer pleasures that may not overcome a plot that can feel slack and emotionally distant.

What is Mufasa: The Lion King about?

Directed by Barry Jenkins and released theatrically on December 20, 2024, the film frames Mufasa’s origin as a story told across generations. Rafiki recounts the past to Kiara, and the flashback follows Mufasa as an orphaned cub who meets Taka. That setup gives the prequel room to explore how Mufasa becomes the figure audiences know, while also making the film responsible for giving familiar franchise history a dramatic shape of its own.

The central question is whether the backstory deepens these characters or mainly fills in what came before. The premise offers a promising emotional foundation in Mufasa and Taka’s relationship, but the film’s broad franchise machinery can leave the journey feeling less urgent than its subject deserves.

Why does Mufasa look so realistic?

Disney describes the production as “Blending live-action filmmaking techniques with photoreal computer-generated imagery.” That is a precise way to understand the look: this is not conventional photographed live action, even though its animals and environments are rendered with striking realism. The visual achievement is easy to notice, but realism and expressiveness are not the same thing.

For this reviewer, the polished images can make the film feel emotionally remote. A musical sequence often benefits from visual exaggeration, invention, or dreamlike movement; a naturalistic surface can constrain those possibilities. The Atlantic’s review makes a related argument, saying the photorealistic style limits the dreamlike imagery musical scenes can offer. The result is a film that can impress as a technical construction without always making its world feel as emotionally alive as its story requires.

Does the music make up for the story?

Music is one of the film’s stronger assets. Disney’s D23 announcement names Lin-Manuel Miranda and Lebo M. among its music contributors, and the Associated Press reported before release that the soundtrack includes seven new songs. Their presence gives the prequel an important connection to the musical identity of The Lion King.

But whether the songs carry the story depends on what a viewer wants from them. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ consensus credits Miranda’s music and Jenkins’ “deft hand,” while describing the story as “fitfully soulful.” The Atlantic critic, by contrast, argues that the songs lack the playfulness of earlier Lion King music. Those are judgments, not settled facts about how every audience will respond; they point to a real tension between musical craft and the difficulty of making new songs feel as vivid and memorable as the franchise’s best-known material.

Is Mufasa: The Lion King worth watching?

If you are drawn to the franchise, interested in Mufasa’s origins, or curious to see Jenkins work in this visual world, there is enough here to make the film worth considering. Its imagery is carefully composed, the music has moments of lift, and the flashback structure gives the story a clear route into Mufasa and Taka’s past.

If you need the songs to be consistently playful or the animation to stretch into expressive, imaginative movement, the film may feel less satisfying. The gap between visual polish and emotional connection is its defining weakness: the images are impressive, but they do not always make the story feel more immediate. Rotten Tomatoes lists the runtime as 1 hour 58 minutes, a substantial commitment for a prequel whose central dramatic arc may strike some viewers as familiar.

Critical verdict

Mufasa: The Lion King is strongest when its music and visual craft give the origin story momentum. Yet neither fully solves the problem of a plot that can feel like an extension of franchise lore rather than a story with its own sustained urgency. The film’s realism is a technical choice, not a guarantee of emotional realism—and that distinction explains why its most polished scenes may still leave a viewer at a distance.
