That parallel does not establish that the film inspired the real incident.
What happened at the Powai studio?
Contemporaneous reports said Rohit Arya held 17 children and two adults at RA Studio in Powai, Mumbai, during what was described as a purported audition on October 30, 2025. Police rescued the hostages, and Arya died after being shot during the operation, according to The Indian Express. India Today reported that a video recovered from Arya’s phone included his stated desire for “moral and ethical redress” rather than money. That reported phrase is not a final official determination of his motive.

How does the incident compare with A Thursday?
Scroll’s October 31, 2025, comparison described A Thursday as a film in which Yami Gautam’s character takes children and two adults hostage at a school in Mumbai. The reported figures and settings show both the resemblance and the differences:
| Comparison | Powai incident, as reported | A Thursday, as described in the report |
|---|---|---|
| Hostages | 17 children and two adults | 16 children and two adults |
| Setting | A studio in Powai, Mumbai | A school in Mumbai |
| Day | Thursday, October 30, 2025 | Thursday, in the film’s premise |
| Hostage-taker | A man, Rohit Arya | Yami Gautam’s female character, described as a school teacher |
The figures and film details are from Scroll’s October 31 report. They support a comparison at the level of a hostage scenario involving children in Mumbai on a Thursday, not an exact match: the reported child count differs, and the real and fictional hostage-takers and locations are different.

Did A Thursday inspire the incident?
The contemporaneous reports cited here do not establish that Arya watched the film, copied its plot, or was inspired by it. Similarity in setting, day and broad scenario is not evidence of a causal link. The Indian Express’s 2022 article identifies A Thursday as a Yami Gautam film and discusses its premise alongside the earlier film A Wednesday; that is film context, not evidence connecting the 2025 incident to either film: The Indian Express on the film.
These details come from news reports rather than a primary police record or the film itself. The reports support the limited plot-parallel comparison, but not a conclusion about the incident’s cause.
