Eight Is Enough ran on ABC from 1977 to 1981, following newspaper columnist Tom Bradford and his eight children. Some cast members later spoke publicly about serious health challenges; others’ stories are different, and the available reporting does not show that the series caused anyone’s illness. The experiences below are individual histories, not a single story shared by the cast.
What the reporting establishes about the cast
The broad claim that multiple actors developed tragic health issues after playing their characters needs qualification. Diana Hyland’s cancer diagnosis came during the show’s first season, not after it. Lani O’Grady discussed mental-health difficulties and substance misuse, while reports on Dick Van Patten identify diabetes complications as the cause of his death. Adam Rich spoke publicly about depression and sobriety, but an Associated Press account published just after his death said the cause was still under investigation. Reporting about Susan Richardson documents financial hardship, not a specific medical diagnosis.

These accounts differ in timing and evidence: some come from actors’ own public statements or interviews, others from reporting on a death. None establishes that playing a Bradford caused a health condition.
Health challenges and hardships, actor by actor
Diana Hyland: breast cancer during the first season
Hyland, who played Joan Bradford, left the show after being diagnosed with breast cancer, CBS reported. The Television Academy’s series history records her death during the first season. Her illness therefore belongs to the period when she was connected to the production, rather than to a later health struggle after the role.
Lani O’Grady: panic attacks, agoraphobia and substance misuse
O’Grady, who played Mary Bradford, described years of severe panic attacks and agoraphobia in a 1994 Los Angeles Times profile. She also discussed misuse of prescription drugs and alcohol; the profile covered her treatment. A Washington Post obituary later reported that she checked herself into a hospital in 1998 to detoxify from prescription-drug addiction. Later death coverage reported drug intoxication, while contemporaneous coverage initially said the cause was pending. These reports document serious struggles, but they are not a complete account of her life.
Dick Van Patten: diabetes complications reported at death
Van Patten, who played Tom Bradford, died in 2015 at age 86. The Los Angeles Times, citing his publicist, reported that the cause was complications from diabetes. That report does not establish when he developed diabetes.
Rank #2
Adam Rich: public comments about depression and sobriety
Rich, who played Nicholas Bradford, spoke publicly about depression and sobriety, including a post saying he had been sober for seven years. In its immediate post-death report, the Associated Press said the cause of death was still under investigation. That account should not be treated as a final determination of cause, nor does it establish a link between his role and his mental-health challenges.
Susan Richardson: financial hardship, not a documented diagnosis
Richardson, who played Susan Bradford, was the subject of an Inside Edition report about financial hardship and Van Patten’s efforts to support her. The report does not establish a particular medical diagnosis. Financial or housing difficulty should not be recast as proof of illness.

What these stories do—and do not—say about Eight Is Enough
The actors’ histories are not interchangeable: one illness was diagnosed during the first season, some struggles were described by the actors themselves, one cause of death was reported as diabetes complications, and one account concerns financial hardship rather than a diagnosis. The available reporting does not substantiate a health-history claim for every cast member, or support ranking whose experience was most difficult. It also does not show that the sitcom caused any of the reported conditions.
Van Patten acknowledged that a successful television run did not guarantee steady work for young performers after a show ended. In an Inside Edition interview, he said: “A lot of these kids when the show goes off the air they don’t work again. It must confuse them. I was once a big hit, now nobody wants me.” That comment speaks to the uncertainty of an acting career; it is not evidence that the series caused the cast’s later health problems.
