On November 25, 2025, the Moon was a waxing crescent: less than half of its visible face was lit by the Sun, and the illuminated portion was growing as the Moon approached First Quarter. The date is in the past; it is not a description of the Moon today.
What the Moon looked like on November 25, 2025
A waxing crescent looks like a curved sliver of light against a mostly dark lunar disk. It is more illuminated than a New Moon but has not yet reached the half-lit appearance of First Quarter. The U.S. Naval Observatory (USNO) defines this phase as partly, but less than one-half, illuminated by direct sunlight, with the lit fraction increasing.
The crescent’s orientation in the sky depends on where you observe from and how the Moon is positioned relative to your horizon. NASA’s archived 2025 lunar visualization offers separate versions for the Northern and Southern Hemispheres: NASA’s 2025 Moon phase and libration visualization.
Where November 25 fell in the lunar cycle
USNO’s phase table lists New Moon on November 20, 2025, at 06:47 Universal Time (UT), followed by First Quarter on November 28, 2025, at 06:59 UT. November 25 fell between those two primary phase events, while the Moon was waxing. USNO reports phase-event times in UT, so local calendars may show different clock times depending on the time zone.

Why there is no single universal illumination percentage
Phase names and illumination percentages describe related but distinct things. USNO explains that lunar phases are not technically defined by the fraction illuminated: primary phases are tied to the Moon’s angular relationship to the Sun, while waxing and waning describe whether illumination is increasing or decreasing. A rounded percentage by itself therefore does not establish the phase.

Any percentage also needs a reference time and location convention. For example, timeanddate.com’s Napa, California, calendar gives 27.7% illumination for November 25, 2025, calculated at lunar noon local time. That is a location- and time-specific calendar value, not a universal figure for the entire date.
USNO’s explanation of Moon phases and percent illuminated provides definitions and explains the distinction.

What the phase name does not tell you
“Waxing crescent” identifies the Moon’s phase, not whether it was visible from a particular place at a particular hour. Seeing it would have depended on local timing, the horizon, and observing conditions. The phase label alone cannot establish what an individual observer saw.
