Some jazz critics and purists never accepted Miles Davis’s turn toward electric instruments, rock rhythms and pop-facing music. But jazz opinion was never unanimous, and Davis’s standing rests on more than one celebrated acoustic period: he repeatedly changed the music’s direction. Today, reassessment increasingly takes in his later work, his public image and the tensions between artistic influence and personal conduct.
Why did some listeners resist Miles Davis?
The dividing line was musical as much as personal taste. Davis’s move from acoustic jazz toward electric guitars, electronics and rock rhythms challenged ideas about what jazz should sound like. Smithsonian Magazine’s 2026 profile says many critics—particularly Stanley Crouch—treated the electric turn as heresy, and reports that some purists still resent Davis’s 1970s and 1980s music. That describes a recognizable current of criticism, not a unified verdict from the jazz world.
The dispute also reflects different standards of judgment. Listeners who prized acoustic improvisation and established jazz forms could hear electric fusion or later pop-oriented choices as a break with the tradition. Others heard Davis’s willingness to change as a central part of his achievement. Rejecting a particular period, then, is not the same as denying his influence across the genre.
How Davis’s reinventions shaped the argument
The National Endowment for the Arts describes Davis as a major force in jazz for more than 40 years. Its career account makes clear that the electric era was one turn in a longer pattern of change, rather than an isolated departure from an otherwise fixed style.

| Period or turning point | What changed | Why it matters to the debate |
|---|---|---|
| Late 1940s: Birth of the Cool nonet | Davis formed the nonet behind the recordings that became known as Birth of the Cool. | His career was already associated with reshaping jazz ensembles and sound. |
| Before Kind of Blue (1959) | He began using modes rather than relying on standard chord changes. | The approach helped make room for a different kind of improvisation within acoustic jazz. |
| 1964: a new quintet | Davis assembled a new quintet. | The group marked another distinct phase, rather than a settled end point. |
| In a Silent Way (1968) | He shifted toward electric jazz. | The change brought the tradition-versus-reinvention argument into sharper focus. |
| Bitches Brew (1969) | Electronic elements and rock rhythms became more pronounced. | For critics wary of fusion, this was a conspicuous break; for others, it was an expansion of jazz’s possibilities. |
| After a 1972 car accident; return in 1980–81 | Following a period of semi-retirement, Davis returned to the scene in 1980 and touring in 1981. | His later work and public presence remain part of the continuing argument, not an appendix to his earlier career. |
The NEA names Davis a 1984 NEA Jazz Master and dates Kind of Blue to 1959, describing it as his most famous album and the all-time biggest-selling jazz album. Those markers show the reach of his acclaim, but they do not settle how every period should be judged. Smithsonian’s account cautions against treating resistance to electric music as proof that the fusion bands were artistically empty.
Why has his reputation continued to grow?
Davis’s stature has grown in part because the story is larger than a single canonical album or a simple division between “early” and “late” Miles. The NEA’s account traces successive changes in his music; Oxford Academic’s 2026 collection, Rethinking Miles Davis, argues that familiar critical accounts are open to reconsideration. It notes that scholarship has often concentrated on the 1940s and 1950s acoustic work, while later music and Davis’s engagement with fashion and mainstream media invite fuller attention.

That shift does not require declaring every experiment successful or every critic mistaken. It asks listeners to consider more of the career on its own terms: how electric music altered the sound and scale of the ensembles, how Davis navigated mass culture, and how his musical choices challenged inherited definitions of jazz. Oxford’s framing places him within both modernism and popular culture, widening the questions scholars bring to the music.
In that sense, reputation and disagreement can grow together. Davis is remembered as an innovator precisely because he did not stay within the style that first won broad recognition. The same changes that expanded his influence also gave critics reasons to object.

How should his music and conduct be considered together?
A fuller account of Davis cannot make artistic importance a substitute for moral judgment. Smithsonian describes his relationships with women as marked by his temper and says they did not survive it. His abusive conduct belongs in any honest account of his legacy; calling him merely “difficult” would blur the harm.
Smithsonian also recounts the racism Davis experienced, including an incident in which he was beaten and arrested after challenging a white policeman. That history helps explain the pressures and violence he faced; it does not excuse the harm he inflicted on women. These are distinct parts of his life, and recognizing one should not erase the other.

For a documentary-minded viewer, the useful question is not whether Davis was a hero or a villain, nor whether one side of the music debate finally won. It is how a musician could help redirect jazz repeatedly, provoke durable resistance, and remain a subject of renewed cultural and scholarly scrutiny—while still being accountable for his actions.
