She wanted to release more songs through her YouTube channel without label support, while keeping that independent work separate from her playback singing for films.
Tamanna was a move toward independent music
Devarsi Ghosh’s May 20, 2018 interview for Scroll focused on Thakur’s transition from playback singing to independent releases. She said she had stepped into composing with Tamanna and planned to put out more singles through her YouTube channel without the support of a record label. Those were her plans at the time, not confirmation of her current release strategy.
Thakur described the song as an electronic dance track written by Amitabh Bhattacharya. She worked with American music producer Bert Elliot, whom she engaged to help achieve what she called an “international sound.”
She wanted composition to remain outside film work
For Thakur, making an independent song offered a kind of creative control distinct from singing for a film. She drew a clear boundary around composing: “I am very clear that I don’t want to compose for films,” she told Ghosh in the 2018 interview. The statement describes her view then; it should not be read as a current career update.

Contemporaneous coverage likewise presented Tamanna as her first independent single. In a 2018 report, The Times of India quoted Thakur on independent music as space to experiment. Her interest was not simply in adding another song to her catalogue, but in exploring work beyond the requirements of a film assignment.
Playback success had already brought major recognition
The independent release followed an established playback career. Thakur received the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer in 2016 for “Moh Moh Ke Dhaage,” from the 2015 film Dum Laga Ke Haisha. The Scroll interview placed that recognition alongside her interest in developing a more personal creative voice through independent music.
