The milestone applies to Disney Animation—not every film released by Disney-owned studios: Pixar’s Inside Out 2 also crossed $1 billion in 2024.
What was the six-year box-office trend?
The shorthand refers to billion-dollar releases from Walt Disney Animation Studios (WDAS), Disney’s animation studio behind films such as Moana and Frozen. Disney’s March 2025 announcement identified Frozen, Zootopia, and Frozen 2 as the studio’s earlier films to reach that worldwide-gross threshold. Frozen 2 opened in 2019; Moana 2 became the next WDAS release to pass $1 billion in 2025. That makes “six years” a calendar-year shorthand for 2019 to 2025, rather than a precise elapsed-time measurement. Disney’s March 2025 announcement also called it WDAS’s third-highest-grossing release at that time.
This is not a claim that Disney-owned films as a whole went six years without a billion-dollar hit. WDAS is distinct from Pixar and from the wider Walt Disney Studios group, which encompasses multiple labels. Pixar’s Inside Out 2 also surpassed $1 billion in 2024. Disney reported that its entire studio group generated $5.46 billion worldwide that year, the first studio group to exceed $5 billion since 2019; that broader figure provides company context, not the measure behind the WDAS trend.
How Moana 2’s box office grew
The reported figures describe different points in the release and should not be treated as interchangeable: an opening estimate is not a final cumulative gross, and a three-day weekend is not a five-day opening.

| Measure | Reported figure | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| First five days | $225 million domestic | Disney’s December 1, 2024 report described this as an estimated five-day opening after the Wednesday release and called it the highest five-day opening of all time at that point. The same report put the worldwide total at $389 million “so far.” Disney, December 1, 2024. |
| Thanksgiving weekend | $221 million domestic | The Associated Press reported this studio estimate for the Thanksgiving weekend, and a $386 million worldwide launch, including $165.3 million internationally. This is a different reporting description and context from Disney’s five-day figure. Associated Press, 2024. |
| Through December 31, 2024 | $906 million worldwide | Disney’s year-end account broke this down as $404 million domestic and $502 million international. The company called it the No. 4 global, domestic, and international release of 2024, and described its opening weekend as the highest-ever reported global animated opening weekend and the highest opening for WDAS. Disney, reporting 2024 results. |
| Later cumulative total | More than $1 billion worldwide | Disney announced in March 2025 that the film had passed $1 billion, becoming the No. 3 highest-grossing film of 2024 and WDAS’s third-highest-grossing release at that time. Disney, March 2025. |
These are nominal reported grosses, not inflation-adjusted comparisons. The figures come from Disney announcements and contemporaneous AP reporting; the available reporting does not establish an independently audited final-gross ledger. The December 2024 amounts were estimates or totals as of their stated dates, while the billion-dollar milestone was reported later.
Why the opening record needs careful wording
Disney said the film opened at No. 1 domestically and characterized its $225 million first-five-day domestic take as the highest five-day opening ever and its Thanksgiving opening weekend as the highest at the time of the December 1 report. AP’s separate $221 million studio-estimate figure refers to the Thanksgiving weekend. The two reports use different descriptions and reporting contexts; one should not be substituted for the other or blended into a single number.

The records are tied to their measures and the date they were reported. They do not by themselves show that Moana 2 had the highest opening under every possible comparison—such as a three-day frame, an all-time opening weekend, or inflation-adjusted dollars.
What the release strategy can—and cannot—explain
According to AP, Moana 2 was initially conceived as a Disney+ series before Disney redirected it to theatrical release. Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian told AP, “It just shows you that the big screen and small screen are not adversarial. They can be complementary and additive.” That is his interpretation of the relationship between platforms, not evidence that streaming exposure caused the film’s theatrical success.

Disney later reported that Moana 2 drew 27.3 million global views on Disney+ in its first five days of streaming. The company also said the original Moana had surpassed 1.4 billion hours streamed on the service. Disney’s footnote attributes the original film’s 2024 viewing-minute figures to Nielsen Streaming Content Ratings, using the Nielsen U.S. National Television panel, Persons 2+, from January 1 through December 29, 2024. These company-reported figures indicate reach across theatrical and streaming windows, but do not isolate what drove ticket sales. Disney’s streaming announcement.

Disney chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios Jared Bush described the franchise’s growth this way: “Seeing the popularity of Moana grow since it was released eight years ago is incredible.” Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman likewise said the sequel had “far surpassed our high expectations this weekend” in the company’s December 2024 opening report. Those are studio statements, not independent explanations of audience behavior.

The box-office sequence supports a narrower, clearer conclusion: Moana 2 became WDAS’s next billion-dollar release after Frozen 2, while also setting major Thanksgiving-period opening marks. It did not end a six-year drought for every Disney-owned studio, and the different opening figures describe different windows rather than a contradiction to resolve by choosing one.
