In May 2019, model Carissa Pinkston was reported to have posted transphobic comments on Facebook under the name Rissa Danielle. After the posts drew backlash and reports that she had lost her agency, she said in a July 22 Instagram post that she was transgender. Pinkston later apologized, writing that she had panicked and thought coming out might improve the situation. Her apology is the basis for describing that claim as false.
What did Carissa Pinkston say?
In May 2019, reports attributed Facebook posts to Pinkston under the name Rissa Danielle. One post read, “Being Transgender does NOT make you a Woman. It makes you simply Transgender,” according to The Independent and ELLE. A further post criticized the response to the first, as NYLON reported. The posts were later deleted; their wording is available through contemporaneous reporting and screenshots, not accessible original posts.
Why did Carissa Pinkston receive backlash?
The remarks were criticized as transphobic, and the controversy widened after Pinkston’s subsequent statement about her gender. Trans model Aaron Philip publicly accused her of lying about being transgender to save her career; other models and acquaintances also questioned the claim, according to OUT and ELLE. These were reactions to Pinkston’s statements, not independent authority on anyone’s gender identity.
Was Carissa Pinkston dropped by her agency?
The Independent reported that Elite Model Management dropped Pinkston after the Facebook comments were identified. The reporting reviewed here does not include a direct confirmation from Elite. It also does not establish Pinkston’s present agency or career status.

What happened after the Facebook posts?
July 22, 2019: Pinkston said she was transgender
The Independent dates an Instagram post in which Pinkston said she had been fired and was receiving hate mail and death threats to July 22, 2019. In the post, as quoted by the outlet, she said she had transitioned at a young age. That statement followed the backlash over the Facebook comments.
Retraction and apology
Pinkston later apologized for her transphobic remarks and explained the coming-out claim. ELLE reproduced her words: “I panicked and I thought if I came out as Trans that I could somehow make things better for myself but it appears I’ve only made things worse.” This is the clearest basis for calling her claim that she was transgender false: she later said she made it in an attempt to improve her situation. Reports say the relevant posts were deleted.
