What Miley Cyrus said about their tension
In Miles to Go, Cyrus wrote: “Emily and I tried to be friends, we really did, but it always ended in a fight,” followed by the question, “Our characters got along so well, why couldn’t we act the same in real life?” The passage is reproduced by Showbiz Cheat Sheet in a May 3, 2020 article. Because that report quotes the memoir rather than establishing a detailed account of the disagreements, it supports saying they had friction—not assigning a single cause or claiming they were always enemies.

They had described a close bond, too
In 2007, a CBS report on a Teen magazine interview presented a warmer picture. Cyrus said that she and Osment were initially “really, really close,” adding that they loved and fought like sisters. Osment called Cyrus “a great friend of mine.” Those contemporary remarks show that affection and arguments could coexist; they do not cancel out Cyrus’s later recollection, but they make “never got along” too absolute.
What is—and is not—known about the cause
The accessible memoir excerpt does not explain what triggered the fights, give examples, or establish a detailed chronology. It is therefore not possible to name a definitive reason from these accounts. The fact that their characters, Miley Stewart and Lilly Truscott, were best friends on Hannah Montana also does not mean the actresses’ off-screen relationship had to match the show.

How their public relationship appeared later
Showbiz Cheat Sheet’s 2020 retrospective recounts public signs of a warmer relationship in later years, including a social-media reconnection and an Instagram Live reunion. Those moments indicate a changed public tone, but they cannot establish what the two privately felt or how close they are now.
In March 2026, TV Insider reported that Osment was working on Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage and could not attend an anniversary premiere. The report did not establish that her absence was connected to the earlier tension; it also said it was unclear whether the same work commitment applied to the pre-taped special. The coverage is about the event, not evidence of a renewed feud: TV Insider’s anniversary coverage.
