Mike White’s April 2025 comment did not reveal a destination for The White Lotus Season Four. He said he wanted to move away from the show’s familiar “crashing waves against rocks” imagery. HBO later confirmed that the season would film on the French Riviera and follow guests and staff around the Cannes Film Festival.
What Mike White said about Season Four
In an April 7, 2025 feature for Max, creator Mike White described the visual direction he wanted for the next season: “For the fourth season, I want to get a little bit out of the ‘crashing waves against rocks’ vernacular.” He added, “But there’s always room for more murders at the White Lotus hotels.” (Rolling Stone UK, April 7, 2025.)

The remark was a broad visual hint, not a location announcement. White did not name France, Cannes, a hotel, or a plot setting in that comment.
Where Season Four is set—and where it is filming
HBO later confirmed that filming began on the French Riviera in April 2026. Its synopsis places the story around the Cannes Film Festival, following a group of White Lotus hotel guests and employees over the course of one week. These are related but distinct facts: the French Riviera is the production geography, while the festival is the story’s setting. (HBO / Warner Bros. Discovery.)

Hotels reported as production locations
The Associated Press identified two hotels used as locations: Hôtel Martinez in Cannes, which is fictionally renamed the White Lotus Cannes, and Airelles Château de la Messardière in Saint-Tropez, fictionally renamed the White Lotus du Cap. The Cannes and Saint-Tropez sites are production locations; they should not be mistaken for separate announcements about the story’s overall setting. (Associated Press, May 15, 2026.)
AP also reported that the production had not materialized in Cannes during the festival days it observed, and that filming at the live festival could be unlikely. The season’s Cannes Film Festival setting therefore does not establish that scenes were filmed at the event itself.

Why Cannes appealed to the show’s producers
Producer David Bernad linked the setting to a Cannes trip he and White took in 2021. He recalled a dinner encounter with a waiter and maître d’ that helped unlock the show’s social dynamics: “We went to dinner and we had a really specific experience with a waiter and a maître d’, and it was the stereotype. It was a very funny moment.” (Associated Press, May 15, 2026.)
