Merle Haggard died on April 6, 2016—his 79th birthday. The Country Music Hall of Fame reports that he died from pneumonia; a contemporaneous Washington Post obituary, citing his manager Frank Mull, described complications from pneumonia. Haggard was a singer, songwriter, guitarist and central figure in the Bakersfield Sound, whose songs ranged from working-life anthems to personal ballads and political commentary.

What did Merle Haggard die of?

The Country Music Hall of Fame says Haggard died from pneumonia. The Washington Post reported complications from pneumonia, citing his manager, Frank Mull. He died on April 6, 2016, the day he turned 79, according to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.

Who was Merle Haggard?

Born April 6, 1937, in Oildale, California, Haggard grew up in the Bakersfield area and became one of the artists most closely associated with the Bakersfield Sound. The Television Academy identifies Oildale as his birthplace; the Country Music Hall of Fame describes his origins in the Bakersfield area. Alongside Buck Owens, Haggard helped bring the region’s country music to a national audience, as the Recording Academy notes.

His early life included a period of incarceration: the Recording Academy says he served time at San Quentin, and the Television Academy describes a three-year stint on a burglary conviction. That experience informed some of his writing, but it was one part of a much longer life and career. Haggard’s official biography identifies his 1981 autobiography as Sing Me Back Home.

What are Merle Haggard’s most famous songs?

“Okie from Muskogee,” “Mama Tried” and “Workin’ Man Blues” are among Haggard’s best-known songs, but they represent different aspects of his writing: cultural and political identity, autobiographical reflection, and working life. Other essential recordings include “Sing Me Back Home” and “Silver Wings,” which show his strength as a storyteller and ballad singer.

“Okie from Muskogee,” a 1969 hit, became a prominent political and cultural touchstone. The Country Music Hall of Fame notes that Haggard’s explanations of the song’s intent shifted over time, so it should not be treated as a simple or unchanging declaration of his personal politics. His catalog is broader than that one song: the Hall of Fame describes his music as moving among honky-tonk, blues, jazz, pop and folk.

How did Haggard shape the Bakersfield Sound?

The Bakersfield Sound developed as a distinct country style associated with the California region and its artists, including Haggard and Buck Owens. Haggard began recording for Capitol and released his first album, Strangers, in 1965, according to the Country Music Hall of Fame. His band, the Strangers, helped shape the music around him; the Hall of Fame notes that its arrangements sometimes included brass and saxophones, an example of how his sound could extend beyond a narrow country template.

Haggard’s versatility was central to his reputation. Bryan Di Salvatore, author of the Hall of Fame biography, calls him “one of country music’s most versatile artists.” That range sits alongside a persistent focus on lived experience: songs about work, regret, home, identity and the people often left outside the spotlight.
