In September 2020, Meghan Markle urged eligible Americans to vote during a TIME100 broadcast special, while Prince Harry spoke about online information and political negativity. Their remarks were a public appeal about participation and online conduct—not a documented endorsement of a candidate. A separate Archewell Foundation voter-registration effort in 2024 was a different event.
What Meghan and Harry said in 2020
The remarks appeared during a TIME special broadcast on ABC unveiling the TIME100. Meghan encouraged eligible Americans to take part in the election. Harry focused on the information people encounter online, urging people to reject hate speech, misinformation and online negativity. TIME’s account of the broadcast reported the context and message.
The coverage describes a general appeal to vote; it does not establish that the couple endorsed a presidential candidate. Harry was not eligible to vote in the U.S. election because he is not a U.S. citizen, as TIME noted.
Why Harry’s remarks were described as personal
ABC quoted a royal source saying Harry was not a working member of the Royal Family and that any comments he made were in a personal capacity. This was the source’s characterization of his remarks, not a formal legal or constitutional finding. ABC’s report provides that attributed framing.

How the 2024 activity differed
In September 2024, staff at the couple’s Archewell Foundation took part in Vote Forward’s letter-writing initiative around National Voter Registration Day. Reporting described the effort as voter-registration outreach and said Meghan and Harry did not name a candidate. It was distinct from the couple’s 2020 televised remarks: the earlier event was a public voting appeal during a broadcast, while the later activity involved foundation staff writing letters to encourage registration. Hindustan Times reported on the 2024 initiative.
