Meghan Markle thanked Nigeria for “welcoming me home” in a visitor-book message at Defence Headquarters in Abuja on May 10, 2024. The Duchess of Sussex had previously said a genealogy test showed she was 43% Nigerian. Her remark came during a three-day visit with Prince Harry focused in part on the Invictus community and mental-health advocacy.
What Meghan wrote in Nigeria’s visitor book
At Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters in Abuja, Meghan signed the visitor’s book on May 10, the first day of the couple’s visit. Her message read: “With gratitude for the support of the Invictus community. And for welcoming me home.” Vanguard News reported the message and the visit.
The wording thanked both the Invictus community and Nigeria. It was a personal expression of welcome, not evidence that the visit was a formal state or royal tour.
Why she described Nigeria as home
At a women’s leadership event in Abuja on May 11, Meghan spoke about learning more about her heritage. She said a genealogy test had indicated she was “43% Nigerian,” and described the discovery as eye-opening. The Associated Press reported her remarks.

Meghan had publicly discussed the result on her podcast in October 2022, according to AP. At the Abuja event, she also spoke about how African Americans may have difficulty tracing lineage and background. The heritage finding helps explain the personal resonance of “welcoming me home,” while her visitor-book message explicitly connected her welcome to the Invictus community.
What the 43% figure does—and does not—establish
The 43% figure is Meghan’s account of a genealogy or DNA-based test result, not an independently verified statistic. The reporting does not name the test provider or explain its method, reference data, or confidence interval. An ancestry estimate is based on a provider’s methods and comparison data; without those details, the number should not be treated as a precise measure of identity or as a result independently confirmed by the coverage.

How the visit was connected to Invictus
Prince Harry and Meghan arrived in Nigeria on May 10, 2024, for a three-day visit at the invitation of Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa. The itinerary included a school visit, meetings with military officers and wounded soldiers, and events promoting the Invictus Games and mental-health work. Nigeria had recently participated in the games. AP’s account describes those activities and the couple’s stated visit context.
The heritage story was therefore one part of a visit that also centered on Invictus and mental health. Meghan’s guest-book wording itself acknowledged the Invictus community alongside her thanks to Nigeria.
