But Ryan’s hair history is not one haircut repeated: it moves from feathered bangs and full curls to sleek and wavy lobs, long layered curls, and a modern return to the signature shape.
What is Meg Ryan’s signature haircut?
It is a short, layered bob or shag with a relaxed, slightly undone finish. Vogue calls it “The Meg,” and Hershberger told Vogue she first gave Ryan the cut for French Kiss. The style became a recurring signature, with variations appearing in films including Addicted to Love, Kate & Leopold, When a Man Loves a Woman, Proof of Life and In the Cut. Vogue’s retrospective and its account of the cut’s revival trace those versions.
Hershberger recalled that the haircut drew attention because it was “the first edgy-but-messy short haircut on a woman.” Ryan later explained that the look originated in the demands of her French Kiss character, who was stranded in Paris without luggage or money and had little opportunity to shampoo: “Sally had to figure out hair that looked bad but sort of good all at once.” Refinery29 reproduces Ryan’s explanation from an essay published in 2017.

The film and appearance descriptions come from Vogue’s hairstyle retrospective and Allure’s account of Ryan’s hair moments. Their timelines describe different photographs and phases, so the lob should not be treated as one continuous, precisely dated style.
What changed when “The Meg” returned?
In 2023, Ryan wore a fresh take on the familiar short, layered look while promoting What Happens Later. Vogue reports that Hershberger styled the version seen on Late Night with Seth Meyers using texturizing paste and volumizing mousse from her own line. Allure describes the October 31 look as a wavy, piecey lob with volume. The modern version keeps the movement and undone texture associated with the original while sitting at a longer length. Vogue also shows Ryan wearing her signature bob with loose waves at the 2024 Met Gala and middle-parted waves at the 2025 Academy Awards. Those later appearances underline that the signature is a flexible shape and finish, not a requirement to keep one exact cut.
How to explain the cut to a hairstylist
Bring a reference photo of the version you want. “Meg Ryan haircut” can mean a short bob-shag, a longer lob or a curly variation, so describe the length and finish as well as the name.

Hershberger has described her construction for a bob as keeping a blunt bottom line, cutting into it for texture without layering the bottom, and adding some disconnected layers above so the hair moves. She has also said, “A bob should never be longer in the back.” That is her stated approach, not a universal salon rule; use it as a starting point for discussing the shape you want.
