Greece is a republic, and its monarchy ended after the referendum of 8 December 1974. The family once at its head remains publicly known as the Greek royal family, but titles such as “Crown Prince” are family styling, not Greek state offices. The best-documented modern generations are the five children of Constantine II and Anne-Marie and the five children of their son Pavlos.
What “Greek royals” means today
The Greek royal family is a former royal house, not a reigning monarchy. The referendum held on 8 December 1974 ended what the family’s official biography calls the Crowned Democracy. Greece has no throne or constitutional crown prince today, so royal titles used by family members do not confer state authority.
The transition had more than one stage. The European Court of Human Rights’ case record recounts the military regime’s purported abolition of the crowned democracy on 1 June 1973; after civilian government returned in 1974, a referendum settled the monarchy’s status. Those events should not be conflated: the junta’s 1973 action and the 1974 referendum were distinct.
Constantine II and Anne-Marie’s family
Constantine II was born on 2 June 1940, the son of King Paul I. He became king in 1964 after his father’s death. The Greek Royal Family’s biography says he won sailing gold at the 1960 Rome Olympics as helmsman of Nereus in the Dragon class, and describes it as Greece’s first Olympic gold since 1912. The family left Greece after the 1967 coup; according to its account, Constantine later lived abroad and returned permanently with Anne-Marie in 2013.

Constantine married Anne-Marie in Athens in 1964. He died on 10 January 2023. Their five children are:
- Alexia, born 10 July 1965.
- Pavlos, born 20 May 1967. The family styles him “Crown Prince Pavlos,” but Greece has no crown prince as a constitutional office.
- Nikolaos, born 1 October 1969. Associated Press reported that he married Chrysi Vardinogianni in Athens on 7 February 2025.
- Theodora, born 9 June 1983.
- Philippos, born 26 April 1986.
Anne-Marie is described by the family as “Queen Anne-Marie, former Queen of the Hellenes.” “Former Queen” makes the historical role clear without suggesting that Greece has a reigning queen.

Pavlos’s children: the younger generation
Associated Press named Pavlos’s five children among the family members who regained Greek citizenship in 2024. They are Maria-Olympia, Constantine-Alexios, Achileas-Andreas, Odysseas-Kimon, and Aristidis-Stavros. This identifies the younger generation without implying that it is a complete directory of all living members of the extended family.
Why did members of the former royal family regain Greek citizenship?
In December 2024, a government-gazette decision granted Greek citizenship to ten members of the family, according to Associated Press: Constantine II and Anne-Marie’s five children and five grandchildren. The family’s own announcement, dated 23 December 2024, said the family had been without Greek citizenship for three decades and described the 1994 law as having rendered them stateless.

The family said a surname was a prerequisite for reinstatement and that the applicants chose De Grèce, a name associated with their late uncle Michel De Grèce. In its announcement, the Private Office of the Greek Royal Family wrote: “It is with deep emotion that, after thirty years, we hold the Greek citizenship again.” This is the family’s explanation of its choice and its feelings about the decision; AP independently reported the citizenship grant.
Why are they still addressed with royal titles?
The family’s FAQ says its titles are hereditary, lifetime forms of address and cites a 1996 Council of State ruling that treated titles as personal identifiers rather than indicators of nobility. That is the family’s account of the terminology and ruling; it does not mean that royal office or political privilege survives in Greece.

For clarity, readers can distinguish between historical description and the family’s preferred styling: call Constantine II the former king, Anne-Marie the former queen, and explain that “Crown Prince Pavlos” is the style his family uses. The family FAQ also says its Athens Private Office represents it, that it does not support political parties or royalist organizations, and that its website is its sole official source of information. Those are statements by the family organization, not independent confirmation of how every institution or Greek citizen uses the titles.

The available biographies and reporting support an overview of Constantine II and Anne-Marie’s children and the names of Pavlos’s children. They do not establish a comprehensive, up-to-date biography of every living relative, a current measure of the family’s popularity, or a current level of public support for restoring the monarchy. The family’s website is useful for its own biographies and preferred language; the European Court of Human Rights provides legal-history context, while Associated Press supplies independent reporting on the citizenship decision and Nikolaos’s wedding.
