Victoria was a real sheep used for some shots in Alien: Earth—but the unsettling, Eye Midge-controlled sheep seen in episode four was not simply Victoria behaving strangely. Episode director Ugla Hauksdóttir described a three-part approach: a live sheep, a limited animatronic, and a CGI version. The “creepiest creature” label is a description of the scene’s effect, not an official ranking.
Who is Victoria the sheep in Alien: Earth?
Victoria is the real animal the production used for some shots in the episode-four sequence. On FX’s official Alien: Earth podcast, episode director Ugla Hauksdóttir said: “We had Victoria, the most beautiful sheep I’ve ever seen, a real live sheep.”
In the story, an alien organism called the Eye Midge takes over a sheep. FX’s episode-four podcast discusses the attack and the resulting sinister host. Victoria was the real sheep on set; the controlled, threatening character is a screen creation made from several elements.
Was the creepy sheep real?
Partly. Hauksdóttir described three versions used to create the sheep on screen. The production combined the live animal’s presence and movement with an animatronic and CGI. The available production accounts do not identify which version appears in each specific shot.

| Version | What it contributed |
|---|---|
| Victoria, the live sheep | Used for some shots, according to Hauksdóttir. |
| Animatronic sheep | A limited-movement puppet that could cock its head, chew a little, and blink. Hauksdóttir said it was present on set. |
| CGI sheep | Provided shots that could not be achieved with the on-set animal or puppet, according to the production account. |
Hauksdóttir described the animatronic this way: “We then had an animatronics sheep that was very limited in movement, but it looked kind of creepy, and it was able to cock its head and chew a little and it could blink its eyes.”
How did Alien: Earth make the infected sheep unsettling?
A harmless animal becomes a calculating threat
Creator and showrunner Noah Hawley said the choice began with the contrast: “The sheep was the most innocuous barnyard animal I could think of.” He added: “The idea of taking something completely harmless and making it malevolent, calculating, and Machiavellian fascinated me.”

The scene’s menace therefore comes from more than an eerie look. Hawley described the sheep watching and learning, with its grasp of cause and effect conveyed visually rather than explained in dialogue. Familiar, quiet behavior becomes unnerving when it suggests attention and intent.
Restraint makes the host feel watchful
Visual-effects supervisor Jonathan Rothbart said the Eye Midge-controlled host should seem observant and deliberate: “We wanted its behavior to feel thoughtful and measured, often still and always watchful, so the audience senses there’s cognition beneath the surface.” He also described its early movements as restrained and somewhat mechanical, as the creature learns how to use the body.

That creative intent gives the sheep a different kind of threat from a creature that relies only on sudden movement or an aggressive appearance: its stillness reads as attention.

Hauksdóttir said the sequence required advance planning to make the live sheep, animatronic, and CGI work as a coherent scene. “So with these all elements, we had to be really thorough with our shot-listing and planning. It’s a complex sequence.”
