Topper starts the series as Sarah Cameron’s wealthy boyfriend, but his shifting loyalties and increasingly volatile choices make him more than a straightforward rival to John B and the Pogues.
Who does Austin North play in Outer Banks?
North plays Topper Thornton. Netflix’s official cast and character guide describes Topper as a Kook—part of the wealthy side of the show’s class divide—and says he is dating Sarah Cameron when the story begins. As Sarah’s relationship with John B develops, Topper becomes entangled in the conflict between the Kooks and the Pogues.
Netflix’s Tudum guide sums up his identity with the line, “Topper is a Kook — and proud of it.” That status helps explain his early rivalry with John B, but Topper’s choices do not stay consistent throughout the story.
How does Topper change across the series?
Netflix’s character summary traces a volatile path rather than a single-minded villain. Topper helps Sarah and John B in one situation; later, he attacks Rafe while trying to save Sarah. His jealousy and anger eventually escalate to burning John B’s house. These turns make him both an antagonist and, at points, someone whose actions complicate the show’s loyalties.

Did Austin North film Outer Banks Season 3 in Barbados?
Not according to the account North gave Netflix Tudum. In a February 27, 2023 article, he said he visited the cast in Barbados for a weekend while he was not filming there. The visit should not be taken as evidence that he filmed Season 3 scenes in Barbados.
