The film’s soundtrack features songs credited to August Moon, but those recordings do not make the group a real touring band.
Who is August Moon?
August Moon is the boy band at the center of the story’s pop-star romance. In the film, Hayes Campbell is the group’s lead singer and a fictional pop star. The movie adapts Robinne Lee’s 2017 novel, which follows Solène, a divorced mother and art gallerist, and her relationship with Hayes. TIME’s account of Lee’s book and the adaptation and the Associated Press review describe the fictional band and its role in the story.
Is August Moon a real band?
No. August Moon is fictional. The film’s soundtrack recordings are real, commercially released music associated with the story, but they are not evidence of a real group performing or touring as August Moon. The distinction is easy to miss because the film gives the fictional act songs with individual credits and a soundtrack release.
How the soundtrack uses August Moon’s songs
Amazon Music’s catalog entry for The Idea of You (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) lists 11 tracks with a total runtime of 32 minutes and a May 3, 2024 date. The credits are mixed: “Taste,” “Dance Before We Walk,” “Closer,” “I Got You,” and “Guard Down” are listed as August Moon tracks, while other songs are credited to performers including Nicholas Galitzine, Anne-Marie, and R3HAB, as well as composer Siddhartha Khosla. It is therefore inaccurate to describe every track on the album as a full-band August Moon performance. Amazon Music’s soundtrack listing provides the album details and credits.

What is on the soundtrack vinyl?
Sony Music Store lists an official vinyl edition of the soundtrack, with a release date of June 7, 2024. The Spain-based store page showed a price of €24.90 when accessed; that is a regional listing price, not a current worldwide price or guarantee of stock. The sequence on the page is:

- “I Got You” (explicit content)

Is August Moon based on Harry Styles?
It is too simple to say that August Moon—or the whole novel—is “based on Harry Styles.” TIME reports that Lee described Hayes as drawing on a range of inspirations and rejected calling the book fan fiction. In her 2020 Vogue interview, as quoted by TIME, Lee said: “This was never supposed to be a book about Harry Styles.” She has also described the story’s central interest as Solène and the ways people think about women’s desires as they age. TIME’s interview with Lee gives that context rather than reducing the book to a celebrity comparison.

Hayes’s age depends on which version you mean: the Associated Press reports that he is 20 in Lee’s novel and 24 in the film. Keep that distinction clear when discussing the character or comparing the adaptation. The AP review identifies the difference.
