Reports also said the Kerala BJP leadership called for actor and CPI(M) legislator M Mukesh to resign, a position distinct from Gopi’s emphasis on awaiting court decisions.
What did Suresh Gopi say?
Gopi made the remarks on August 27, 2024, while responding to questions about allegations in the Malayalam film industry. Onmanorama reported him saying, “The media is misleading the public’s mindset.” Scroll described him as calling the allegations “food” for the media and accusing reporters of shaping public perception misleadingly.
In a statement reproduced by PTI and carried by ThePrint, Gopi said: “The complaints are in the form of allegations at the moment. What are you telling people? Are you the court? You are not. The court will decide. Let the court decide.” These quotations are as reported by the named outlets; they are not verified here against an original recording or transcript.
Why did he make the remarks?
The comments came after the Justice K. Hema Committee report on sexual harassment and gender inequality in Malayalam cinema became public. Coverage on August 27 addressed allegations involving actors and directors, including M Mukesh, a CPI(M) legislator and actor. Gopi’s criticism focused on how the media was reporting those allegations and on the role of courts in determining their veracity.

Did Kerala BJP leadership disagree with Gopi?
Contemporaneous reports described a difference between Gopi’s remarks and the Kerala BJP leadership’s position on Mukesh. India Today said the party had distanced itself from Gopi’s comments. PTI/ThePrint quoted Kerala BJP president K Surendran saying, “Party is what the party leadership decides,” and reported that the party’s position was that Mukesh should resign.
What allegations were reported against M Mukesh?
Scroll reported that actor Minu Muneer alleged Mukesh and several others physically and verbally abused her while she was working on a project in 2013. These are allegations attributed to Muneer, not findings established by the reports cited here. The contemporaneous coverage also reported that the government announced a seven-member special investigation team to investigate allegations made after the Hema Committee report was published. The sources cited here do not establish the team’s later actions, a court finding, or any subsequent legal outcome.
