What happens in the premiere?
Mike and Mitch work between the prisons and the town
The episode establishes Kingstown as a place where the prisons shape daily life and local relationships. Mitch and Mike McLusky are brothers who serve as liaisons between prisoners and the surrounding community, handling requests from people on both sides of the prison walls. The premiere opens with a boy hitting a tennis ball carrying cash into a prison yard, an image that introduces the transactions and informal channels running through this world.
Sam’s letter puts Mike in the middle
The official synopsis centers on Sam, a young guard who is set up to deliver a prisoner’s letter. Mike tries to get him out of trouble. That predicament captures the brothers’ role: they are not simply prison officials or community advocates, but go-betweens navigating a system where a seemingly small favor can carry serious consequences.

Vera’s request brings Kyle into the plan
Vera Sunter approaches Mitch about retrieving something Milo buried. Mitch and Mike bring their younger brother Kyle into the plan, adding a family thread to the episode’s network of favors and prison contacts. The buried item becomes a separate strand from Sam’s letter, showing how quickly the brothers’ work can move from routine requests into riskier dealings.
Mariam draws a boundary
Their mother, Mariam, teaches incarcerated women and discusses Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee in class. When a student asks her to seek help from her sons, Mariam refuses. The scene contrasts her work as a teacher with the power her sons wield outside the classroom, and makes clear that the family’s influence does not mean every problem can—or should—be solved through them.
What happens to Mitch, and why is Mike called the new Mayor?
The closing stretch turns the episode into a story of succession. At the outreach office, Alberto confronts Mitch and kills him. Mike later survives a confrontation at the Commons, withdraws to his cabin, and returns home to find Mariam grieving Mitch.
A woman then asks Mike for help with her imprisoned daughter, saying she was told he is the new Mayor. Mike rejects the label, but the request signals that people are already looking to him to fill his brother’s place. The title is not a formal office: it describes the informal authority and obligations that come with mediating between the prisons and Kingstown.

How the episode’s storylines fit together
- Sam and Mike: The official synopsis foregrounds the guard’s letter-delivery predicament and Mike’s attempt to help him.
- Mitch, Mike, and Mariam: The family storyline shifts sharply after Mitch’s death and ends with others turning to Mike.
- Milo, Vera, and Kyle: The buried-property request shows the brothers handling prison-community transactions beyond Sam’s immediate crisis.
The detailed scene sequence is supported by the available screenplay, rather than a verified transcript of the broadcast episode. Its closing events are therefore best understood as screenplay-supported plot details; the official episode listing independently confirms the setup and Sam storyline, but not every scene or the ending.
