Max’s return to the HBO Max name was a streaming-brand decision announced in May 2025. The corporate story has since changed: Paramount completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery on October 6, 2026, forming a combined company called Skydance. As of October 8, HBO Max’s help center said existing subscribers did not need to take action and that no immediate service changes had been announced.
Why did Max change back to HBO Max?
On May 14, 2025, Warner Bros. Discovery announced that Max would become HBO Max again that summer. The company said restoring HBO to the name emphasized the brand’s association with high-quality programming. CEO David Zaslav said the move was intended to “further accelerate that growth in the years ahead.” Warner Bros. Discovery’s announcement set out the branding change; the company did not describe it as a change to the service’s corporate ownership.

The Max name had followed the Warner-Discovery merger and the earlier HBO Max branding. The Associated Press described the 2025 announcement as a return to HBO Max roughly two years after the switch to Max. AP’s report provides that timeline and context.
Did Warner Bros. Discovery split up with Discovery?
No. The headline’s split framing no longer describes the outcome. Warner Bros. Discovery had announced a plan to separate its businesses in 2025, but Paramount instead completed its acquisition of WBD on October 6, 2026. The completion announcement named the combined company Skydance. Skydance’s completion announcement reports the close and the new company name.

The deal announcement said WBD shares ceased trading on Nasdaq effective October 6. Under the transaction terms, WBD shareholders received $31.01666668 per share in cash. The filing with the SEC contains the transaction details. This corporate acquisition is distinct from the earlier decision to restore HBO to the streaming service’s name.
What happens to an HBO Max subscription after the Paramount deal?
As of October 8, 2026, the HBO Max Help Center’s company-update FAQ said subscribers could continue using HBO Max or Paramount+ as before. It reported no immediate changes to apps, content, subscriptions, pricing, or access, and said existing subscribers did not need to do anything right then. Read the HBO Max Help Center FAQ.
That is a statement about immediate changes, not a guarantee about future integration. The FAQ says it will be updated as more information becomes available, so subscribers should consult it for later announcements.

The October 6 completion announcement described two global streaming services, and the October 8 FAQ said there were no immediate app changes. Those sources do not announce that HBO Max and Paramount+ have merged into one app. Shared ownership under Skydance should not be mistaken for an already completed app merger.
